Dr. Melanie Knight
Dr. Melanie Knight is an associate professor in the department of sociology and Advisor to the Dean of Arts on Blackness and Black Diasporic Education. Her research focuses on Black activism/organizing, Black collective economic initiatives and Black women business owners. She has published in a number of journals, including the Critical Race and Whiteness Studies Journal, Gender, Work and Organization and The Canadian Geographer. Dr. Knight is currently sole Principal Investigator on her second Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Insight Grant looking at Black community organizations in Toronto and the rise of the Black movement in Canada (1890-1990). Outside of her work in the academy she collaborates with a number of community organizations that deliver programs and advocate for the health and well‐being of Black Canadians. She was President of the Black Canadian Studies Association. She also supports organizations that promote Black history and heritage.
