First Nations
Through a groundbreaking partnership between First Nations Technical Institute (FNTI) and Toronto Metropolitan University (formally Ryerson), First Nations students are able to earn a Level 1 (opens in new window) Certificate, a Level 2 (opens in new window) Certificate, and a Bachelor of Arts (honours) in Public Administration and Governance (opens in new window) . Since 1999, courses have been delivered in First Nations communities across Ontario, at the FNTI campus in Tyendinaga, and at Ryerson University.
The Department of Politics and Public Administration at TMU was recognised for its efforts to provide education to Ontario First Nations when it won a (PDF file) 2010 IPAC/Deloitte Public Sector Leadership Award (opens in new window) , which was presented at the 05 April 2011 meeting of the Ryerson Senate.
This video, prepared as part of the nomination/application for the award, explains the origins and goals of the partnership.
This program is an important initiative that provides learning and academic accreditation to First Nations Administrators. It will assist First Nations government administrators (and administrators of other Indigenous organizations) to manage effectively and to gain control over their economic future.

"I have a strong compassion for the development of First Nation communities, and I am professionally and personally committed to expand my personal skill levels in order to assist with the future development of our communities. I see this Public Administration Program as an incredible opportunity to assist me in achieving these goals."
