Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto is an exemplary project that preserves heritage while reinventing it. Located in Toronto’s former Don Valley Brick Works, the forty-acre industrial site is spread across a ravine that became part of Toronto’s park system in 1994. Now the former industrial brownfield and remaining structures have been transformed, respecting the industrial heritage of the site and its buildings. Partnering with the city of Toronto, the reuse of the Brick Works and its extensive landscape is an initiative of Evergreen, a not-for-profit organization.
Among the buildings that were repurposed are the Pavilions, a sheltered outdoor space inside part of the former factory. It now holds a farmers’ market, plant nurseries and many activities. The Evergreen Marché building provides another source for buying food from local farmers and producers as well as a place to learn about cooking. It is adjacent to the Discovery Gardens, another factory building that was transformed into a sheltered open-air native-plant demonstration garden. A new floor supports 20,000-square-feet of native plant demonstration beds in large raised mounds.
In the winter, the space is completely transformed as the planted mounds become the ornamental objects within a large skating facility. A nursery building, Evergreen Gardens, includes demonstration gardens for edible plants and native species. In addition, Chimney Court is a play area for children which includes fruit trees and berry bushes, where school groups, community groups and families can learn to garden with hands-on planting, care and maintenance.
The Centre for Green Cities is the only new building on the site, incorporating a welcome centre, administrative offices for the Evergreen Foundation and workspace for Evergreen’s partners. The Centre also serves as an idea incubator, an education institute, an interpretive space, a showcase for green design, and a canvas for community expression.
Fundamental to the site design is the connection between the built environment and nature, demonstrated through the design of porous transitions between landscape and architecture to allow flows of storm water, native habitats and plantings to pass through the site, integrating high-tech and low-tech sustainable technologies. This project integrated urban agriculture from its inception as one of the core means for community engagement, education, and recreation, as well as a way to promote healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle. Together with the farmers’ market and other healthy initiatives, the Brick Works urban agriculture and food initiatives promote health, increase food security, and bring people together.

Evergreen Brick Works à Toronto est un projet exemplaire de préservation du patrimoine. Situé dans le feu Don Valley Brickworks à Toronto, ce site industriel de 40 acres s’étend au sein d’un ravin qui, en 1994, est devenue partie intégrante du réseau de grands parcs de Toronto. Aujourd’hui, les anciennes terres contaminées par les activités industrielles et les infrastructures encore présentes ont été restaurées, en respectant l’héritage industriel du site et des bâtiments. En partenariat avec la ville de Toronto, la réutilisation du Brickworks et de ses vastes paysages est une initiative de Evergreen, une organisation à but non-lucratif.
Parmi les bâtiments requalifiés on retrouve le Pavillon, une cour recouverte conçue à partir d’une ancienne usine. Celui-ci regroupe aujourd’hui un marché-fermier, une pépinière et d’autres activités. De plus, l’aire de jeu des enfants comprend plus espèces d’arbres et d’arbustes fruitiers. Le bâtiment du marché Evergreen fournit une autre source de produits alimentaires frais cultivés localement, et devient par le fait même un lieu d’apprentissage culinaire. Il est adjacent au Discovery Garden, une usine reconvertie en parcelle recouverte abritant une sélection de plantes indigènes. Un nouvel étage supporte une litière surélevée de 20 000 pieds carrés qui forme des dunes de terre. Écoles, groupes communautaires, jardiniers et familles s’y retrouvent pour cultiver et entretenir les parcelles. Durant l’hiver, l’espace est entièrement converti alors que les collines végétalisées deviennent des objets ornementaux où est aménagée une vaste patinoire. Une pépinière, Evergreen Gardens, comprend des jardins démonstratifs de plantes comestibles et indigènes. Il s’agit aussi d’un espace où les citoyens peuvent s’approvisionner en plantes, semences, terreau biologique et fertilisant, et où ils peuvent approfondir leurs connaissances sur la culture biologique de plantes indigènes et comestibles. De surcroît, un nouveau bâtiment, le Centre for Urban Sustainability (Centre de Viabilité Urbaine) est actuellement en construction.
Ce projet intègre le concept d’agriculture urbaine comme élément fondamental pour la participation citoyenne, l’éducation et la récréation, de même que comme moyen de promouvoir des habitudes de vie et alimentaires saines. Avec le marché fermier et ses autres initiatives durables, les projets agricoles de Brickworks favorisent la santé des habitants, leur sécurité alimentaire et la cohésion sociale.
