Accessible Classrooms & Furniture

Accessible Furniture: A student may require accessible furniture to accommodate specific physical, mobility or ergonomic needs. This may include adjustable chairs and/or desks.

Accessible classrooms: A student may require accessible classrooms to navigate physical barriers. This includes:

  • Accessible Classroom Design: Automatic doors, ample space for maneuvering mobility devices, accessible seating arrangements.
  • Accessible Classroom Location: Proximity to elevators, accessible washroom facilities, proximity to various classrooms within their schedule.
  • Accessible Classroom Features: Facilities such as whiteboards instead of blackboards that allow for high-contrast visuals.

Students registered with AAS who have accessible classrooms and/or furniture accommodation will receive an email from AAS prior to the start of classes each semester. AAS staff will confirm class schedules and individual accessibility requirements to start preparing for the semester.

If a student changes their schedule (add/drop, section change, etc) during the semester, they are instructed to let AAS know as soon as possible. As AAS works with various campus departments to schedule and deploy furniture and/or classroom location scheduling, it may take 1-2+ weeks to accommodate a changed schedule.

While scheduling and furniture deployment is best done before classes start, we understand that students may inquire about these accommodations later in the semester. In these cases, a student would meet with their Accommodation Facilitator to discuss and navigate next steps.

While AAS works to keep updated records on accessible spaces and furniture available on campus, the TMU campus is large and evolving, and there may be locations or classroom features we have yet to learn about. If you have found a location on campus that is (or is not) accessible based on your disability-related needs please let us know. We value collaborating with community members to foster a more inclusive learning environment.
