SLC Building Protocols & Guidelines

Bicycles, mopeds, unicycles, hoverboards, and scooters (electronic or manually controlled), and other similar vehicles* are not permitted indoors at the SLC and must be locked up outside. (TMU does not assume any responsibility for loss, theft or damage.)

To keep the SLC accessible to everyone, do not block accessible ramps or entrances with parked wheeled devices/vehicles.

TMU community members are encouraged to choose from the more than 1,100 outdoor bicycle parking locations on campus equipped with stationary, permanent bicycle “post and ring” poles or racks. Please refer to the TMU Bicycle parking page for further information.

*Assistive mobility devices (ie. wheelchairs (manual or power-driven), wheeled walkers, etc.) are exempted.

Skateboards and Skating Devices

Any person using skateboards, in-line skates, roller skates, roller blades, or other skating devices must adhere to the following safety protocols:

  • Skating is not permitted inside or outside SLC property, including external building steps, ramps, etc.
  • Skating stunts of any kind are prohibited. Skating on steps, retaining walls, landscape walls, benches, handrails, and similar structures is not permitted due to potential damage to University property and personal safety concerns.

Smoking and vaping is prohibited within all University buildings, including the SLC.

TMU’s Smoking and Vaping Policy, available on the University Administrative Policies website, sets the university’s rules as they apply to all forms of smoking and vaping on campus. The policy captures TMU's current rules and practices that align with and follow existing provincial laws and the Smoke Free Ontario Act (external link) , but also includes specific items that are unique to a university, such as the Smoke-Free Quad and exemptions for research purposes.

Smoking or vaping is not permitted:

  • inside any enclosed university property (including any place, buildings, residences, structure or vehicle that is covered by a roof)
  • inside any enclosed public spaces (including event spaces and workplaces);
  • within 20 meters of the Early Learning Centre children’s playground
  • within 9 meters of university-owned building entrances, exits, loading docks, fresh air intakes, and compressed gas storage areas; and
  • in the Kerr Hall Quad (the green space located within the four sections of the Kerr Hall building).

TMU’s Smoking and Vaping Policy is in line with the university’s commitment to the success of its students, faculty and staff by creating a safe, secure and healthy environment that puts the physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing of our people first.

It is illegal to sell tobacco on university and college campuses (this applies to buildings that are owned and areas that are leased by a postsecondary institution or student union).

See also, City of Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 709-Smoking (external link) , and the Smoke-Free Ontario Act (external link) .

Impact on others: If you are a smoker, it’s important to remember that not everyone is. There are people with allergies or aversions to this, so we ask that you abide by TMU policy and municipal by-law.

It is illegal and against Ontario liquor laws (external link)  for minors (under age 19, in Ontario) to possess, sell, procure, or consume alcohol.

Ontario's Liquor Licence and Control Act (external link)  prohibits the possession and consumption of alcohol in public places that are not licensed or designated for alcohol use.

Consuming alcoholic beverages in a common area on University property that is not licensed* is prohibited.

Having open alcohol in hallways, common lounges, or stairwells on University property is also prohibited.

*Alcohol use and service on campus is governed by the Liquor License Act of Ontario, and the associated regulations under the Act. Permission to rent or use Toronto Metropolitan University campus facilities does not automatically convey the privilege of alcohol licensing. The use and service of alcohol in a campus facility is administered through the Director, University Business Services and is coordinated by the booking contact. Licensing facilities is dependent on meeting all of the provincial and municipal approvals and the conditions applied by the Director, University Business Services, which include all arrangements for the delivery and service of alcohol to be served in the facility.

Individuals who choose to consume alcohol, initiate or engage in activities or events with alcohol held on University property are responsible for their own conduct and actions.

TMU Staff/Security will intervene when alcohol is used illegally or when its abuse leads to conduct that endangers the individual(s) involved or others, or that results in damage to the property of the University, disrupts its activities, or interferes with the rights of other persons.

Consequences for any inappropriate behaviour on campus related to the use of alcohol/drugs may be addressed through the Student Code of Non-Academic Conduct (Policy 61).

The SLC adheres to Toronto Metropolitan University’s Animals on Campus Policy and Animals on Campus Procedure.

  1. Pets are not permitted within campus buildings.
  2. Service animals are permitted and must be allowed to accompany persons with disabilities and/or their handler on campus, unless prohibited by law or the presence of the service animal endangers health and safety of individuals on campus.
  3. If a service animal is not permitted because of legal prohibition or due to health and safety requirements, the university will provide alternate support to permit access to goods and services, or to provide reasonable accommodation for an employee or student.
  4. Animals approved for use in University teaching, research and creative activities are permitted on campus for such purposes. Existing University policies such as the Ethics Review of Research Involving Animals Policy as well as other regulations, such as the Canadian Council on Animal Care guidelines, govern the presence of animals on campus for academic purposes.

The SLC does not permit postering or solicitation within the building.

Traditional postering is used only by the SLC, Facilities and building maintenance crews to advise of temporary issues (e.g. out of order elevators/bathroom stalls, hazards, etc.).

Any unauthorized posters in the SLC will be removed.

As an alternative to postering, members of the campus community can utilize the campus’s digital signage.

Create a digital ad and have it displayed on more than 70 screens on campus. Find out how at Digital Signage.

For more information on putting up posters elsewhere on campus, see TMU’s Community Regulations Posters section.

All individuals campaigning in the building are required to wear a campaign pass, available at the SLC Welcome Desk. When the Welcome Desk is closed, visit SLC HQ (SLC 516) or speak to a staff member in the building.

To get a Campaign Badge:

  • Check in at the Welcome Desk, and
  • Exchange your OneCard for a Campaign Badge.
  • When you’re done campaigning, sign out and return the Campaign Badge for your OneCard.

This campaign pass shows SLC guests that you are approved to be there and acts as a way to monitor the total number of people campaigning in the building. Each campaigner must return their pass within two (2) hours of signing it out.

All candidates and slates are permitted a maximum of five campaigners in the SLC at any one time. This is to allow candidates to have a presence in the SLC without overwhelming students studying here.

Note:

  • Campaigning is only permitted on the 1st floor (including the seating above Starbucks) and the 6th floor.
  • Candidates must be at least 8 feet from the elevators, and must not block accessibility ramps, stairwells or fire exits.
  • Campaigners on the 1st floor shall not interfere with events occurring in the Amphitheatre.

If candidates do not follow these campaigning protocols, SLC staff will keep a record of infractions and, where requested, provide this information to the appropriate Chief Returning Officer.

Your TMU OneCard acts as official identification for you while you are on campus. While on campus, students, faculty or staff are strongly encouraged to carry their OneCard.

A member of the TMU Security team may ask that you provide a valid form of identification (such as a TMU issued OneCard) where such information is relevant to the legitimate pursuit of their duties.

Students shall not possess, distribute or use false or altered identification.

See  (PDF file) Student Code of Non-academic Conduct Pol #61.

The SLC strictly prohibits the operation of drones, including remotely piloted aircrafts (RPAs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), both indoors and on SLC property. This policy aligns with the Toronto Metropolitan University Drone Safety & Authorization Requirement.
