Volunteer Day

Are you ready to make a meaningful impact in our community? The TMU Leadership team invites you to participate in this semester's Volunteer Day!

Volunteer Day is an opportunity for TMU students and staff to give back to our community. Our goal is to create a positive impact in the local community while fostering a spirit of volunteerism and social responsibility at TMU.

On Volunteer Day, TMU students and staff come together to lend a helping hand to a local charity or non-profit organization.  Share your skills, passion, and time to create a brighter tomorrow for those who most need it.

Get Involved: Fall 2024

Join us for a day of compassion and community as we prove that small acts of kindness can make a difference. Be a part of something bigger than yourself - because together, we can change lives.

Fall 2024 Volunteer Day will be taking place on Thursday, November 21st at St. John the Compassionate Mission (external link)  (155 Broadview Avenue). Learn more about The Mission below.

Students and staff will be divided into groups across different locations for Volunteer Day, with shifts available in the morning (9 AM - 2 PM) and the afternoon (2 PM - 4 PM). While students may leave at any time, a minimum commitment of two hours is preferred. Sign-ups for specific roles and responsibilities will be shared after registration. Available roles include:

  • Preparing vegetables for the meals program
  • Supporting the bakery
  • Serving meals to guests
  • Setting up tables for meals
  • Sorting clothing at the thrift shop

There will be a social tea time at 9 AM, and lunch will be served at 1:30 PM.

Volunteers are welcome to enjoy the prepared food, or they may bring their own lunch.

We are also collecting non-perishable items to donate to St. John the Compassionate Mission. Please drop off donations on the 4th floor of the SLC in the designated box by the information desk between November 4th and 20th.

More About St. John the Compassionate Mission

This fall semester, our team will be volunteering at St. John the Compassionate Mission (external link) . Established in 1986 in Toronto’s east end, St. John’s provides meals and a wide range of programs to support marginalized individuals within a nurturing community setting. The Mission also operates two non-profit social enterprises—a bakery and a thrift shop—which offer work experience, training, and a sense of dignity for workers, many of whom are underhoused or on social assistance. Notably, St. John’s runs the city’s only breakfast program that opens at 5 AM, striving to be a stable, supportive presence in a rapidly changing neighborhood.

The Mission welcomes everyone! Today, many of those who come to the Mission are underhoused and coping with addiction. St. John’s encourages local residents to see the Mission as a shared community space where people from diverse backgrounds can come together, share food and conversation, and connect with one another.
