Academic Standing
What does this mean?
- Your CGPA is 1.67 or higher.
- And you have met all other conditions outlined in a Probationary Contract.
What are the consequences?
You may continue with your studies.
What are the next steps?
No further action is required on your part, other than to be cognizant of the number and type of courses you take so that your status is not negatively impacted.
What does this mean?
- Your CGPA is between 1.00 and 1.66; or
- You are a first year student with a CGPA of less than 1.00 after your first semester of study; or
- You have been reinstated after a Required to Withdraw (RTW) period and is working on raising your CGPA to 1.67 or higher.
What are the consequences?
- You will be required to have a developmental Probationary Contract outlining a specific plan for studies and academic support.
- You will not be able to register in more than the maximum number of courses (which may vary depending on previous performance) outlined in the Probationary Contract.
- You must achieve a term grade point average (TGPA) of 1.67 or higher to continue.
Failure to meet the terms of the Probationary Contract will result in being Required to Withdraw (RTW) or Permanently Program Withdrawn (PPW) if previously RTW.
What are the next steps?
- You must attend a mandatory probationary session where you will meet with an Academic Advisor and sign a Probation Contract. Not attending or signing a contract will mean not being allowed to enroll in courses for the semester.
- Proceed to enroll in the courses stipulated on your contract.
- If you are experiencing any personal or academic problems during the semester, you must contact us and/or your professor.
- Failure to inform us or your professor may jeopardize your academic status and successful outcome of an appeal.
Full Time Degree and Part Time Degree - Mandatory Probationary Session

What does this mean?
- Your cumulative grade point average (CGPA) was less than 1.00, or;
- Your term grade point average (TGPA) was below 1.67 while on probation, or;
- You have violated other terms of your Probationary Contract.
What are the consequences?
- You may not continue in your current program of study or transfer to another Ryerson undergraduate program until 12 months have elapsed.
- After the 12 months have elapsed, you must apply for reinstatement in order to continue your studies. If readmitted, you will be reinstated to the Part time Degree program.
- You may choose to participate in the Fresh Start program for reinstatement to your current program, or transfer to another program (where permitted) by submitting an application by the required deadline. Participation in the Fresh Start begins after sitting out for one semester after the RTW status was assigned.
What are the next steps?
- Review the criteria to participate in the Fresh Start program
- If your CGPA is below 1.00, you will not be eligible to take part in the Fresh Start Program and must sit out for 12 months before you can resume your studies.
- Apply for reinstatement after 12 months have elapsed by the appropriate deadline.

What does this mean?
The Fresh Start program is an opportunity for students who have been assigned a Required to Withdraw (RTW) status to resume their studies after sitting out for one semester instead of 12 months. To be eligible to participate, you must have a CGPA between 1.00 and 1.66.
What are the Fresh Start Probationary Contract Requirements?
Fresh Start (EAP1) Probationary Contract
- You will be enrolled in 2 credit courses based on previous academic performance.
- If you have any outstanding failures, you will be required to repeat these courses.
- You will also be automatically enrolled into one (non-credit) Fresh Start Strategies course (CIFS 100) for which you must achieve a pass.
- You must achieve a TGPA of 1.67 or higher.
Fresh Start (EAP2) Probationary Contract
- If you are successful with EAP1, you may continue the following semester with an EAP2 contract.
- You may choose not to continue with an EAP2 contract, in which case your status will return to RTW.
- If you choose to continue with EAP2, you will be required to enrolled in 4 credit courses,(2 if you are a Part time Degree student) as determined on contract.
- It is your responsibility to adjust your schedule to comply with your EAP2 contract requirement.
Fresh Start Program Notes
- You cannot drop any courses; otherwise you will be withdrawn from the Fresh Start Program and your status reverted to RTW.
- You are responsible for all fees and should be aware of deadline dates for course enrollment drops.
- Courses taken during EAP1 and EAP2 will count towards the degree and be included in your CGPA.
- You may not qualify for OSAP during the Fresh Start Program and are required to have appropriate funding.
- You must clear all outstanding account holds in order to be registered for your classes.
- Academic Grade and Standing Appeals at the end of the term will not be accepted.
What are the next steps?
- Book a one-on-one meeting with your Student Advisor.
- You are academically and financially responsible for any course registration during the semester.
- It is your responsibility to contact your program advisors and instructors if you are experiencing academic and personal problems during the term.

What does this mean?
- You are resuming your studies after being Required to Withdraw (RTW) for 12 months.
- Prior to your RTW status, you may have been a Full time or Part time degree student.
- Your application for reinstatement was accepted and you are permitted to take courses, however you must “Qualify” to continue your program by meeting certain conditions.
What are the consequences?
- You will be required to have a Qualifying Probationary Contract outlining a specific plan of study and academic support.
- You will not be able to register in more than the stipulated number of courses written in the Qualifying Probationary Contract.
- Qualifying Probation students can register for 1 or 2 courses as specified by the school.
- You must achieve a TGPA and CGPA of 1.67 or higher to achieve a Clear standing for the next semester.
- If your TGPA is below a 1.67 (even if your CGPA is above 1.67), you will be Permanently Program Withdrawn (PPW).
- If your TGPA is 1.67 or higher, but your CGPA is still below 1.67, you will “qualify” to continue your studies the next semester, but on Probation.
- If both your TGPA and your CGPA are 1.67 or higher, you will “qualify” to continue your studies with a CLEAR standing.
- You must repeat failed courses before attempting any new courses.
Failure to meet the terms of the Qualifying Probationary Contract, will result in Permanent Program Withdrawal (PPW) from the program.
Note for Qualifying Probation Students
Achieving a CLEAR standing does not mean you will automatically return to full time studies; you must apply within the appropriate deadline for consideration and there will be a CGPA requirement.
What are the next steps?
- You must book a one-on-one session with your student advisor and sign a Qualifying Probationary Contract.
- Failure to attend the probationary session and signing your Qualifying probationary Contract will result in all of your classes being dropped for the semester.
- If you are experiencing any personal or academic problems during the semester, you must contact us and/or your professor.
- Failure to inform us or your professor may jeopardize your academic status and successful outcome of an appeal.
What does this mean?
- Your academic performance has resulted in a ‘Required to Withdraw’ Standing for a second time; or
- You have failed a required course for your program a third time; or
- You have not met the terms of your Qualifying Probationary Contract; or
- You have been denied reinstatement to your program for a second time.
What are the consequences?
- You are withdrawn from your program and you may not apply for reinstatement into that Faculty.
- You may apply to a different program for the Fall semester of the following calendar year through the Undergraduate Admissions Office.

- Check your email and mailbox for information about your PPW Standing.
- If you wish to apply to a different program, application deadlines and other admissions information can be found online.
