As a past IEF student, I can confidently reflect on the pivotal role that the program played in my development and preparation for life after TMU. The quality of professors and the content of their lectures boosted my capabilities as budding economist, allowing me to adapt quickly in competitive and challenging environments. The experience was truly unique as rigorous and thorough syllabus coverage, coupled with constant one-on-one support by the entire faculty, laid the foundation that allowed me to excel in further academic pursuits. Moreover, coursework or sessions to develop practical tools for life after school were fundamental to my overall development. The emphasis on a balance between academia and practical experience was evident through carefully guided support to obtain initial internships and develop critical skills for the workplace. Looking back, IEF was instrumental in helping me to achieve my ambitions, as has been the case for many of my former classmates. As people behind IEF continue to push the boundaries of a modern economics program, it is inevitable that students of the future will benefit tremendously.

Name of High School: Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Secondary School, Canada

The IEF program appealed to me because it offers a well-rounded curriculum ranging from theoretical economics courses to empirical applications. The small class sizes and program events allowed me to form connections with peers, alumni and professors who helped me through my career progression. I enjoyed the program, especially ECN 820, the thesis project I completed under the guidance of Professor Stacey. I apply many of the concepts I learned through IEF even today in my current role as a mid-market investment banker. This is a great program for anyone interested in pursuing a versatile business degree with a quantitative focus!

The dual focused nature of this program (Economics & Finance) has helped me to stand out as finance professional with a extensive understanding of economics. The internship program allowed me to venture outside of class to gain real life experiences. I was able to discover my interest, passion and career path because of the exposure. The faculty was very knowledgeable and provided the attention needed to each and every student. I was able to build a strong network as I had the opportunity to spend meaningful amount of time in the faculty office doing assignments and projects with my classmates (or even just hangout). This program was truly an investment in myself and my future.

Name of High School: Fort Erie Secondary School (Fort Erie, Ontario)

My undergraduate studies at TMU (formerly known as RU) truly changed who I am today professionally and personally. My time in IEF program was a period of intense learning, but also a great deal of fun. My favourite things about IEF program were the university culture, diversity, the faculty and my fellow classmates. The culture fostered the sharing of ideas, critical discussions, and collaboration among students and faculty across a wide range of interests. The cultural diversity helped me meet people of different backgrounds and learn different point of views. The faculty members are always supportive, kind and, more importantly, treat students with respect. The small class size helps students get the attention they need and helps make a personal connection with the faculty members. I have become more confident due to such a nurturing and friendly environment. Every single student’s intellectual potential can be fully explored owing to the rigorous training and constant mentorship one gets through IEP.

IEF set me up for success by allowing me to develop three key aspects of my profile; Academic, Professional, and Extracurricular. The combination of these have created a foundation which my success builds from. Academic – small and engaging classes challenged me and encouraged me to find answers to questions within my fields of study and beyond into other areas focusing on an interdisciplinary approach. Professionally – the mandatory internship ensured that I was developing my professional network and trying different types of positions and industries to discover where I was happy. Extracurricular – the IEF program enabled students to leverage their entrepreneurial spirit and get involved in extracurricular activities and create the student experience which they desired.

Name of High School: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Secondary School

The IEF program helped to lay the foundation for my career progression through various financial institutions. The internship program landed me my first job at one of the top 5 Canadian Banks and I was able to obtain valuable work experience at the undergraduate level. The rigorous and in-depth course work along with the undergraduate thesis gave me the competitive advantage against other schools and programs when I entered into a Capital Markets role. The course content (particularly the finance courses, which I took a personal interest in) helped me gain an understanding of how financial products and markets function.

Name of High School: Notre Dame College, Welland ON

The IEF program was a great mix of theoretical learning and practical experience. The smaller classes size were great for academic growth and networking, a crucial factor in professional advancement. The professors had proven private and public sector experience, which was a welcomed and valuable diversification from purely academic mentorship. I chose IEF specifically for internship component in order gain experience and put my learning to the test - these opportunities eventually led me to my current role with the Government of Canada’s Foreign Service working on development, political, and economic files abroad.
