Student Diversity Self-ID
“By learning who’s here and who’s not, we can begin to make changes that break down barriers.”
—TMU student
At Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), all undergraduate and graduate students are asked to fill out the Student Diversity Self-ID after signing in to the student portal MyServiceHub.
This data creates a picture of the diversity of students in an academic year and will help us track the success of students from equity-deserving groups. This data is used to help improve access to education and the experience of all students at TMU.
The Diversity Self-ID Program counts people from six equity-deserving groups: women, racialized people, Black people, First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples, persons with disabilities and 2SLGBTQ+ people. Within each group, there is also a rich diversity. We ask students who identify in an equity group if they identify in specific racialized or Indigenous groups, categories of disability or specific sexual or gender identity groups.
With self-identification, students choose how they identify
It is voluntary to self-identify and there is a "prefer not to answer" option for each question. Students may also update their responses at any time in MyServiceHub.
With the help of all members of our community, TMU will be successful in moving towards our goal of accessible and inclusive education for all.
