Midwifery (MWF)
MWF 11A/B Working Across Difference in Midwifery-A/B
This course draws on perspectives from sociology, anthropology, cultural studies and women's studies to explore the challenges and opportunities of working across differences of race, class, sexuality, ability (and other markers of difference) in midwifery care. The course will focus on developing and strengthening the skills required to work competently and compassionately across social and identity differences among and between midwives, midwifery clients and other health care providers.

MWF 41A Midwifery Care Clerkship-A
In this final clinical course the emphasis will be on clinical skills and decision making. The student will be expected to act as a primary caregiver and provide midwifery care in all phases of childbirth care in all settings. Students will plan care and make clinical decisions with minimal supervision. Students participate in seminars which focus on case review and reflective practice. Tutorials and clinical placement occur in separate semesters. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.

MWF 41B Midwifery Care Clerkship-B
In this final clinical course the emphasis will be on clinical skills and decision making. The student will be expected to act as a primary caregiver and provide midwifery care in all phases of childbirth care in all settings. Students will plan care and make clinical decisions with minimal supervision. Students participate in seminars which focus on case review and reflective practice. Tutorials and clinical placement occur in separate semesters. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.

MWF 42A Maternal and Newborn Pathology-A
By completion of this course the student will have integrated theoretical and clinical content and have acquired a sound knowledge base and the clinical skills to provide primary midwifery care throughout the childbearing cycle. Students will continue to develop decision-making skills, emergency management and clinical judgement. Tutorial situations focus on situations which involve transfer of care and relationships with other health care providers. Tutorials and clinical placement occur in separate semesters. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.

MWF 108 Aboriginal Childbearing
This course investigates the realities and experiences of Aboriginal women and families during the childbearing year and how they are shaped by Aboriginal ways of knowing, being and living as well as the intergenerational effects of colonialism. Through a decolonized lens, students examine issues affecting health and wellness balanced with critical analysis around the role of Aboriginal midwives in their communities, working as allies, and providing culturally secure care and support.

MWF 113 Life Sciences for Midwifery
This course is divided into two sections: the Nature of Matter, and the Nature of Life. This course provides an overview of basic concepts relating to chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology. Content areas will include practical applications of clinical chemistry, specimen collection, related disease entities and pathologies, and laboratory values. A variety of evaluation methods will be used.

MWF 114 Pharmacotherapy
This course introduces concepts of pharmacotherapeutics. This course provides an overview of basic concepts in pharmacology, pharmacy and therapeutics relevant to the practice of midwifery in Ontario. Unifying concepts include pharmacokinetics, toxicology, adverse reactions in pregnancy and lactation and the neonate. A variety of evaluation methods will be used.

MWF 120 Normal Childbearing
This course offers weekly small group tutorials and an extended period of clinical experience in midwifery practice under the supervision of a midwife preceptor. The placement focuses on clinical skills including assessment and care planning as a beginning level primary caregiver in prenatal, labour and birth, postpartum and newborn care. Tutorials cover theoretical knowledge for midwifery care in normal childbearing, including common variations. The course may exceed the standard hours of instruction. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.

MWF 150 Midwifery: With Woman
This course provides an introduction to the profession of midwifery and women's experience of pregnancy, birth and early parenting. Through this course the student will develop an understanding of the model of midwifery in Ontario and internationally, and develop interpersonal and communication skills. Students will have opportunities to learn from women in a role of support and observation.

MWF 201 Reproductive Physiology
This course provides an in-depth understanding of human reproduction with particular emphasis on intrinsic control mechanisms and extrinsic methods of regulation of reproduction. This course will also provide the basis for understanding alterations from normal mechanisms including the influence of medical conditions on reproductive processes. (Prerequisite BLG 10B requires a minimum grade of C-).

This course allows students to engage in specialized scholarly and project work within the field of women's and infant health, where the content of the proposed studies is unavailable in the curriculum. The proposed area of study should be related to the research and practice interests, and availability of a midwifery faculty member. A plan of study must be submitted by the student and approved by the faculty member prior to course registration.

MWF 220 Interprofessional Placements I
This course involves clinical placements such as: labour and delivery unit; neonatal nursery or paediatric practice; obstetrics practice; primary maternity care and women's health settings; an online simulated placement; and an elective. Students gain skills and learn about roles and scopes of other care providers and interprofessional relationships. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.

MWF 250 Midwifery: Clinical Skills
This course is an introduction to the clinical skills and competencies necessary for the practice of normal midwifery care as preparation for the first midwifery clinical placement in the following term. Students will be introduced to a variety of skills utilized in prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum care, including well woman and newborn physical assessment, monitoring fetal and maternal well being in labour, conducting births, collection of laboratory specimens, and universal precautions.

MWF 304 Principles and Methods of Research
Advanced critical analysis of midwifery and related literature. Principles of research methodology and statistics are used to systematically examine the literature in relation to selected topics. Students participate in an ongoing research study. This is a reading, self-study course.

MWF 305 Interprofessional Maternity Care
This course consists of weekly tutorials provided in a distance format. Content builds on MWF 120 with a focus on variations of normal and aspects of clinical midwifery care involving collaboration with other health care providers. The course is taken concurrently with MWF 220 and addresses the theoretical basis for interprofessional collaboration and explores related professional issues such as ethics and risk management. Opportunities for students to interact with faculty and peers will be provided.

MWF 315 Midwifery Issues
This online course focuses on professional issues such as promotion of normal childbirth, maternal and child health policy, social justice, risk management, ethics and international midwifery. The major assignment of this course will be a synthesis paper in publishable format. Students interact with faculty and peers online and via web formats.

MWF 320 Complications and Consultation
This course includes a clinical placement under the supervision of a midwife preceptor and tutorials focused on common complications, situations which involve consultation with other care providers, and on the development of clinical decision-making skills and clinical judgement. The students further develop their knowledge and skills relating to preconception, antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum and newborn care.

MWF 325 Birth and its Meanings
This course explores representations of pregnancy and birth in society and culture, including popular culture and the media; creative arts such as film, literature, visual art, and other cultural expressions. Attention to diversity in representation and how representations reflect and/or challenge social relationships of power are central to the course. A major piece of creative art work is the final assignment for this course.

MWF 344 Advanced Clinical Skills I
This week long intensive course focuses on advanced clinical skills and a framework for primary care and interprofessional practice. It involves hands-on demonstration and practice in simulated situations. It includes workshops on fetal wellbeing; IV therapy; induction and augmentation of labour; management of labour; the newborn in transition and breast-feeding challenges.

MWF 345 Advanced Clinical Skills II
Advanced Clinical Skills II is a one week intensive course. It follows from Advanced Clinical Skills I and includes workshops on advanced suturing skills, consultation and transfer of care and emergency skills. It gives students an additional opportunity for enhancing hands on skills prior to entering their senior midwifery placements.

MWF 370 Elective Placement
This four-twelve week clinical placement course provides students with the opportunity to participate in an elective placement in a midwifery practice. Midwifery Program students will have the opportunity to address additional learning needs as identified in a learning contract developed with the faculty. It is also available to Special Students by permission of the program. Students enrolled in this course will provide care to women in home and hospital settings under the supervision of a midwife clinical preceptor and a member of the midwifery faculty. This course is offered based on availability of preceptors and faculty. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.
