Brian Millado
Helping students excel
A long-standing interest in youth development and spoken-word poetry is what led Brian Millado to pursue a BA in English at TMU's Faculty of Arts. After enrolling and becoming a member of the program’s inaugural class, he discovered it was better than he ever expected. He says instructors and administrators regularly integrated new teaching approaches and curriculum components in response to students’ feedback, which kept the program fresh and relevant.
“It felt like we were trailblazers, and the team was super receptive to our feedback and ideas, which really kept me engaged,” Millado says.
Arts, and TMU in general, afforded many opportunities for Millado to explore and develop different interests. His extracurricular activities included taking on the role of Events Manager at the university’s 2014 TEDxTorontoMetU (formerly TEDxRyersonU) event, serving for a year as Arts lead mentor in Trimentoring, where he developed and coordinated events for Faculty of Arts student mentors and mentees. He also coached TMU's spoken word group Poetic Exchange to the international College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational in 2015.
Some of the opportunities Millado took on were pivotal to his future career. As an event lead on the TMU Orientation Crew in the summer of 2015, he planned and implemented several activities and events to welcome new students. In his last academic year, he held a work-study position as a community manager and brand ambassador at Student Life TMU, where he helped manage TMU's digital and in-person community initiatives.
Both experiences helped Millado find his calling – helping students excel. He has built a career in student engagement in a wide variety of industries that has included roles at the UNITY Charity, University of Waterloo, University of Toronto Scarborough campus, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and Qualcomm. Millado currently holds the role of Global University Relations Partner, where he leads strategy on how Qualcomm can positively interact with students and schools to ensure the strong technical aligned students and students from diverse backgrounds are encouraged and supported in potentially exploring a future with the Qualcomm team.
