Document requirements
If your course doesn't have an equivalency in our database, you’ll need to upload a course outline with your Transfer Credit Application on MyServiceHub. You’ll need to accept a Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Offer of Admission in order for us to assess your courses for transfer credits.
What’s in a course outline?
A detailed course outline (or syllabus) is normally provided on the first day of a class. In order to have it assessed for transfer credit, it must include:
- Course title and course code (must match your transcript)
- Course description
- Course objectives/learning outcomes
- Weekly list of topics
- Textbooks used
- Information about assignments/essays (especially for liberal studies credits)
- Information about labs (if applicable)
- An evaluation scheme
For liberal studies courses, the outline must include detailed information about assignments and essays (e.g. word count and percentage of final grade)

| Types of courses | Course outline requirements |

| Foreign language courses | Course outlines for foreign language courses taught at TMU (French, Spanish, Chinese and Arabic) are acceptable in the original language and don’t require English translations. |
| Courses taught in French | If your course was taught in French, the original outline (in French) accompanied by an unofficial translation, will be accepted. |
| Courses taught in other languages (not English or French) | If your course was taught in a language other than English or French, you’ll need to provide a certified translation of the course outline, along with the official outline in the original language. You can use a notary public or a recognized translating service. TMU doesn’t offer this service. |
Where do I get a course outline?
Your course outline must be issued by your previous institution. Please note:
- The course outline can’t be altered.
- We won’t accept a link to a course outline on the internet or academic calendar descriptions.
- The submission of insufficient or incomplete course outlines can delay your results.
Not all courses need a course outline.
Please only submit course outlines for courses that are identified as “No Rule” on your Transfer Credit Report.
We understand that you may not have kept your original course outline. Here are a few tips:
- Search your school’s website for a detailed course outline
- Speak with a friend who also took the course
- Contact your former teaching department
- Approach your previous professor
- Course outlines from previous/future terms (within two years) are acceptable provided the course title and course number match your transcript
If you’ve tried all these options and still can't get a course outline, a written note from a professor on the institution’s letterhead can be submitted. It must include all of the course details. If the content has changed, a summary of the differences must be provided by the professor.
You don't need to submit an official transcript if it was sent with your application for admission. If we need a more recent transcript, we'll notify you by email.
You can apply for transfer credits for courses that are in progress. You’ll need to arrange for the submission of an official transcript (with your final grade) once it’s available. Here are some options:
- Have your school email it to tcredits@torontomu.ca
- Drop it off (in a sealed envelope) at the ServiceHub, Attention: Transfer Credit Unit
- Mail it to us or have your school mail it:
