Dr. Murtaza Haider

Dr. Murtaza Haider is the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs and a full professor of Data Science and Real Estate Management. He also serves as the Research Director of the Urban Analytics Institute (external link, opens in new window) . Previously, he has held positions including Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Programs, Director for Internationalization, Interim Director of the School of Health Services Management, and Chair of the Department of Real Estate Management.

Professor Haider began his academic career at McGill University as an assistant professor in the Faculty of Engineering, where he founded and directed the Urban Systems Lab, funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation. He also served as the Director of Gardner Hall Student Residence.

Professor Haider’s research interests encompass business analytics, data science, housing market dynamics, transportation, infrastructure, urban planning, and human development in Canada and South Asia. He is the author of "Getting Started with Data Science: Making Sense of Data with Analytics (external link, opens in new window) " (2016), co-published by IBM Press and Pearson. He has collaborated with IBM to develop and offer courses in data science on Coursera and CognitiveClass.ai (external link, opens in new window) . Over a million learners have attended his "Intro to Data Science" course worldwide, while "Intro to Stats with Python" has over 32,000 registrations.

In addition to his academic work, Professor Haider is a syndicated columnist with Postmedia (external link, opens in new window) . His weekly column on real estate markets appears nationally in The National Post/Financial Post and in local newspapers, including the Ottawa Citizen, Vancouver Sun, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Sun, and Montreal Gazette.

Murtaza Haider holds a Master's in Transport Engineering and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto.
