
Marilyn Monk , MSc(A)N.
Ms. Marilyn Monk is a Health Care Executive, who served in Senior Leadership roles at Academic Healthcare organizations in the United States and Canada, most recently as Executive Vice President at SickKids Hospital in Toronto from 2008 until she retired in 2019. The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), affiliated with the University of Toronto, is Canada's most research-intensive hospital and the largest Centre dedicated to improving children's health in the country.
In her role as Executive Vice President, Marilyn had accountability for leading and managing all of SickKids Clinical Programs and Services, the Information Management and Technology portfolio, as well as the Medical and Scientific teams in the Departments of Diagnostic Imaging and Image Guided Therapy, Departments of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine, and Psychiatry.
Marilyn began her career in Montreal, working at the Montreal Children's Hospital, initially as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Children's Mental Health, and later as Associate Director of Nursing. Marilyn went on to serve as the Associate Executive Director of the Jewish General Hospital for almost 10 years. Marilyn also held an adjunct Faculty appointment as Assistant Professor at McGill University. Prior to returning to Canada in 2008 Marilyn was recruited to the United States in 1995 where she held executive leadership positions in 2 academic healthcare organizations,
including her employment by Vanderbilt University Health System as the Chief Operating Officer of Nashville General Hospital.
External Boards and Committees:
Marilyn has extensive Board and Committee experience at local and National levels. In Canada, Marilyn served 3 years as Chair of the Board of Children’s Healthcare Canada (CHC) and was a member from 2010-2018. CHC represents health care leaders, professionals and over 100 organizations including acute care hospitals, rehabilitation centres and home care agencies committed to providing a national voice to advance and advocate for practices and policies that will impact and improve the lives of Canada’s children, youth and families.
Marilyn served as the Chairperson of the Dean's Advisory Council of the Ted Rogers School of Management at Toronto Metropolitan University, serves as a member of the McGill University Chancellor’s Advisory Committee in Toronto, and as an Advisory Board member for Workforce Edge.
Since 2020 Marilyn has served as a Board member of Lumenus Community Services, one of Ontario’s largest community organizations focused on Child, Youth and Family Mental Health, Autism and Developmental needs. Marilyn Chairs the Program and Quality Committee of Lumenus. Marilyn served on additional Board committees, and was a member of Lumenus’s Strategic Planning Committee. Marilyn is a former Board member and founding leader of Boomerang Health, a SickKids subsidiary and multidisciplinary outpatient healthcare centre for children. Marilyn also served as Chair of SickKids Centre for Community Mental Health (CCMH) Board, a community mental health agency with 3 sites in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) serving children, youth and families.
Academic Credentials:
Marilyn received an undergraduate degree in Science from Mount Allison University and a Master’s of Science (Applied) in Nursing from McGill in 1980.
Additional accomplishments and activities:
Currently, Marilyn is active with consulting, teaching and coaching work.
Marilyn has published a book chapter , a number of papers, has presented at numerous conferences in the US and Canada, and currently works with students in the Top 200 program at Toronto Metropolitan University’s Business School (TRSM) and serves as an Executive Advisor for their Leadership Center.
