Comprehensive Student Support and Resources

The TMU School of Medicine is committed to offering a supportive environment that meets students’ needs and helps them navigate their medical education and career journeys.

From the start of the program, each student will be paired with a faculty academic coach who provides continuous, personalized support throughout their medical school experience. These coaches are integral to helping students thrive in our competency-based curriculum. Coaches will regularly meet with students to review their progress, address any challenges, and provide tailored advice. The Learner Progress Unit (LPU) further supports students by offering specialized academic resources and addressing any unique learning needs.

The Learner Affairs Unit is students’ first point of contact for any unexpected challenges. Regular one-on-one check-ins offer personalized guidance to help students to navigate academic workload, time management, or other concerns. For deeper personal or mental health challenges, the Centre for Student Development and Counselling (CSDC) provides confidential, professional support both on-campus and online. The CSDC team includes psychologists, social workers, and psychotherapists dedicated to helping students address personal challenges and build essential skills for success.

The School of Medicine’s commitment to supporting Black and Indigenous students is integral to its mission. Mentorship programs connect students with faculty and peers who understand and support their experiences. The school offers culturally relevant programming, dedicated student groups, and personalized advice on academic and career challenges. Services also include culturally competent mental health resources that acknowledge and support Black and Indigenous students’ identities as a crucial aspect of their success.

We are committed to creating an inclusive and accessible learning environment. In collaboration with TMU's Academic Accommodation Support (AAS) team, the School of Medicine provides tailored academic support and accommodations to meet students’ unique needs, whether it’s adapting learning materials, modifying clinical placements or providing assistive technology.

The School of Medicine’s career advising services offer personalized guidance to help students navigate the complexities of medical careers and residency applications. Students will benefit from one-on-one sessions with experienced advisors, career planning tools, support for residency applications, workshops, mock interviews, and networking opportunities with professionals in various specialties.

The school also provides comprehensive financial management support. This includes guidance on financial aid options, scholarships, and bursaries, as well as budgeting tips, financial planning, and student loan management, to ensure that students have the information and tools needed to create a customized financial plan.
