Student Honours & Awards
“Highly Commended Entrants” refers to students whose projects or papers ranked in the top 10 percent from the 5,514 submitted to The Undergraduate Awards. Of the year’s cohort, two Ryerson graduates and one student were recognized with this accolade: graduate Cameron MacDonald (English) in the category of Literature: English; graduate Edith Nataprawira (Performance) in the category of Art History, Music, Film and Theatre; and student Amanda Jekums (Nutrition) in the category of Social Science: Social Policy.
Chemistry graduate Mohammad Chaudhry was named Region Winner (highest-performing paper in the US/Canada region) in the Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences category for his paper Simultaneous Point and Axial Chirality Generation through Intramolecular Buchwald Hartwig Cross-Coupling Reaction.
PhD candidate Farheen Khan (Electrical and Computer Engineering) was awarded the Michael Servit Best Paper Award at the 26th International Conference on Field-Programmable Logic and Applications held in Switzerland. The paper was co-authored by professor Andy Ye (Electrical and Computer Engineering).
PhD student Tracy Lackraj (Chemistry and Biology) placed third in the 2016 Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) Food Safety Research Forum in the Student Poster Competition.
Nicole Jeffery (Nursing) presented Pedagogical and Evaluation Methods in Graduate Nurse Practitioner Education: Rapid Review of Grey Literature at the 2017 Global Alliance for Leadership in Nursing Education and Science in Miami, USA.
Undergraduate student Jacqueline Au (Fashion) received the Barbara Turnbull Award, which honours a Ryerson student who has overcome a physical disability to pursue studies at the Faculty of Communication and Design.
Undergraduate students Alessandra D’Alessio and Alyssa Vani (Interior Design) won gold for their project “Braille Boxes” at the A’Design awards, the world’s largest design competition.
PhD student Khalid Hafeez (Electrical and Computer Engineering) received the 2016 Best Land Transportation Paper Award from The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Vehicular Technology Society conference held in Montreal. Professors Lian Zhao and Bobby Ma (Electrical and Computer Engineering) were co-contributors with their former student.
