Primary Healthcare Nurse Practitioner Program

Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner (PHCNP) Students will be expected to complete clinical placements for the following courses: Advanced Health Assessment and Diagnosis (AHAD I and AHAD II), Therapeutics (THERA I and THERA II), and Integrative Practicum (IP). Clinical placements occur in any of the following settings:

  • Community Health Centers (CHC)
  • Long-Term Care Settings (LTC)
  • Physician's Offices
  • Outpatient Hospital Clinics
  • Emergency Rooms/Urgent Care
  • Family Health Teams (FHT)
  • Home Care
  • Marginalized Communities/Harm Reduction Sites

Clinical placements enable PHCNP students to consolidate their clinical abilities and apply their knowledge to real life situations. Students work under the supervision of an NP or MD Preceptor through direct care, health promotion, and the treatment and management of chronic health conditions. By working with an experienced preceptor in clinical practice settings, students develop an expanded scope of practice to diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications and perform certain procedures.

Toronto Metropolitan University’s Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner (PHCNP) Certificate is an intensive program that prepares nursing professionals to write the College of Nurses of Ontario's NP – Primary Health Care (Ontario)  (external link, opens in new window) exam.

Our PHCNP Certificate program is offered under the Council of Ontario University Programs in Nursing (COUPN). Learn more about the Ontario Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner program. (external link, opens in new window)
