PROFESSOR JOEY POWER RETIRES FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY

After more than thirty years of teaching in the Department of History, Professor Joey Power has announced her retirement. Our resident expert on African history, she earned her PhD at Dalhousie University, and went on to teach there, as well as at the University of Toronto and the University of Malawi. In 1990, Dr. Power arrived at Toronto Metropolitan University and made it her institutional home, teaching courses on African history, approaching history through film, and historical methods.

Over the course of her career, Dr. Power contributed significantly to the field of African history. Her interest in 20th-century Central Africa led her to focus on Malawi, where she conducted extensive fieldwork and produced critical scholarship. Her 2010 book, Political Culture and Nationalism in Malawi: Building Kwacha, draws on archival sources together with oral histories that she collected herself to examine the development and nature of Malawi’s political culture in the colonial and early post-colonial periods. Aside from this groundbreaking monograph, Joey Power has written numerous articles in leading journals that reflect her interest in Central African history, along with comparative politics and democratization. In addition to her research and writing, Professor Power has been a member of the Canadian Association of African Studies, and has served as editor of the Canadian Journal of African Studies.

The Department of History will miss Dr. Power’s devotion to her students, to her scholarship, and to her colleagues. Furthermore, the members of the Department of History are particularly thankful for Joey Power’s dedicated service to the Faculty Association and her representation of the department across the university. Her colleagues and students all wish her the greatest happiness as she embarks on new adventures in retirement.
