This course explores Toronto’s transformation from small town to major metropolis.
Students learn about the origins of Toronto’s neighbourhoods, streetscapes, and local government structures, and develop an understanding of the historical background of current urban issues. The course examines urban issues common to many North American cities and those specific to Toronto, including immigration, social classes, and ethnic rivalries; the growth of industry; pollution and public health; struggles over municipal services; attempts to legislate morality; urban calamities such as fires and floods; the growth of suburbs; and the emergence of today’s multicultural city.
