Building temperatures may fluctuate during the transition from heating to cooling
With April here, Facilities Management and Development (“Facilities”) is gradually taking the heating systems offline and starting up the cooling systems that will keep our buildings comfortably cool in the summer.
Every spring and fall, our heating and cooling systems work hard to make the changeover to accommodate the seasonal temperatures. The chillers that keep our buildings cool are activated once overnight temperatures are consistently warm enough that the steam system is no longer required to heat our buildings.
How this may impact you
With outdoor temperatures continuing to swing between unusual highs and lows, the changeover will be very gradual. The transition is already underway and it is expected to take approximately three weeks to fully transition the system in all buildings. We ask for your patience as it often takes additional time to fine-tune adjustments to airflow and local temperatures.
Wide ranges in outdoor temperatures during this time may cause you to feel too cool or too warm if you are working in buildings on campus — this is what we call the “shoulder season”. It is the period between peak seasonal temperatures.
Tips for staying comfortable during “shoulder season”
There are some measures you can take to help improve your comfort during this changeover period. You may want to consider some of these tips:
- Dress in layers
- Keep an extra sweater handy
- Close blinds or curtains
- Keep interior doors open to improve airflow
