Updated: ENG overnight fire alarm testing May 7-8

April 30, 2025

As shared in March, Facilities Management and Development (“Facilities”) has been upgrading the existing fire alarm system in the George Vari Engineering and Computing Centre (ENG). To ensure the system is working correctly, testing of the fire alarm system is required.

To minimize the disruption to activities in the building, the testing has been scheduled to take place from 11 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7 to 6 a.m. on Thursday, May 8.

During the testing, the fire alarm’s audible and visual signals will be activated intermittently as contractor personnel take decibel measurements and ensure that all signal devices and their power supplies function correctly.

Work will conclude by 6 a.m. on May 8 and all systems will return to normal.

If you are aware of activities taking place in ENG during the testing period, please advise impacted individuals that fire alarm testing will occur while they’re in the building.

Please note that as previously communicated, continued upgrades will continue through August 31, 2025. We will provide further updates as required.

ENG fire alarm upgrades scheduled from Mar. 17 to Aug. 31, 2025

Facilities Management and Development (“Facilities”) is upgrading the existing fire alarm system in the George Vari Engineering and Computing Centre (ENG) to extend the longevity of the system and modernize components for better maintenance. The work will include installing new cables, devices and electrical panels, then decommissioning and removing the existing system.

The work is set to begin Monday, March 17, 2025 and will take place between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. until Sunday, August 31, 2025.

How this may impact you

To minimize the impact on building occupants, the work has been scheduled to be completed outside of regular operating hours.

Contractors may be required to enter some classrooms, labs, studios and office spaces overnight to install and remove cabling and replace devices. If you have activities in the building late at night, you may encounter contractor personnel in the building. Contractors will make every effort to minimize the negative impact of their work and will ensure that furniture and equipment is protected from dust.
