TMU partnership brings classes to the Carlton Cinema
Toronto Metropolitan University has entered into a new classroom partnership with Imagine Cinemas’ nearby Carlton Cinema to host TMU classes starting in January 2023. The Carlton Cinema (CAR) at 20 Carlton Street will provide nine additional lecture hall spaces with TMU lecterns.
Students, faculty and staff will be required to present their OneCards to enter. Please carry your OneCard and be prepared to present it prior to each class.
The Carlton Cinema opened in 1981 and was run by Cineplex Odeon as the first multiplex in Toronto to show first-run arthouse and niche films and the university also used the theatres as lecture spaces during the 2003 – 2004 academic year. The Cineplex Odeon closed in 2009 and reopened a year later under new ownership with upgraded sound systems and projectors. It was acquired by Imagine Cinemas in 2016 with a continued focus on foreign and independent films sharing screens alongside Hollywood fare.
In collaboration with Imagine Cinemas, TMU’s Facilities Management and Development team helped to prepare each cinema auditorium to integrate TMU teaching podiums with audio-visual system controls that are familiar to university instructors. On-site A/V and technical support will be provided by the university’s Media Services and cinema staff will be on site to assist with any facility issues that arise during class hours.
A ten minute walk from the TMU campus core and a half-block from the Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC) and the College Park subway station, the Carlton Cinema is within the service area of the WalkSafe program available to all TMU community members by calling Campus Safety and Security at 416-979-5040.
Modeled on the success of TMU’s partnership with the Cineplex Cinemas Yonge-Dundas, this new agreement opens up more teaching spaces within our downtown precinct and highlights the adaptive and integrative solutions that make TMU’s urban campus unique in Canada.
