Awards & Funding
The Department of English offers various awards and grants to support graduate education and recognize excellence in its programs. The awards celebrate the students' achievements and contributions to the English Department.

MA Award for Academic Excellence | Awarded annually to the student who has attained the highest Grade Point Average in a given year in the Literatures of Modernity Program. In the case of a tie, the funds are divided among the winners. | $650 |
Mimi Choi Essay Award | Awarded annually to the student who has written the best essay in a Literatures of Modernity course. Essays are nominated by professors (with the student’s approval) and vetted by the Graduate Committee. | $250 |
MA Award for Best Major Research Paper | Awarded annually to the student who has written the best Major Research Paper in a given year in the Literatures of Modernity Program. Essays are nominated by the supervising professors (with the student’s approval) and vetted by the Graduate Committee. | $450 |
MA Award for Best Scholarly Essay | Awarded annually to the student who has written the best Scholarly Essay in a given year in the Literatures of Modernity Program. Essays are nominated by the supervising professors (with the student’s approval) and vetted by the Graduate Committee. | $450 |
MA Practicum Award | Awarded annually to the student who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in the Practicum in a given year in the Literatures of Modernity Program, on the basis of the Practicum assessment from the placement host and the student's Practicum Report or Project. | $450 |
MA Student Leader Award | Awarded annually to the student who has made an outstanding contribution to the Literatures of Modernity Program by fostering intellectual, creative, and social engagement with peers within and beyond the department. The award is based on student voting and determined by the Graduate Committee which compiles the results and establishes the winner. | $250 |
At the graduate level, information on a range of scholarships, awards and other funding is provided by the Yeates School of Graduate Studies.
Toronto Metropolitan University provides financial support in the form of scholarships, awards or assistantships for as many full-time students as possible. Scholarships and awards are offered on a competitive basis, so the number awarded in any year varies, depending on academic performance.
