The CPA Certification Program
Are you interested in becoming a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) in Canada? You’re on the right path! Here is a guide to help you understand the steps and resources available to achieve your CPA designation.
Why become a CPA?
The CPA designation is one of the most respected and globally recognized accounting credentials. It opens doors to diverse career opportunities in accounting, finance, auditing and more. As a CPA, you will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to thrive in a dynamic and evolving business environment.
Steps to becoming a CPA
CPA Prerequisite and Preparatory courses: The TMU Bachelor of Commerce (BComm) in Accounting in the Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM) is recognized by the CPA Ontario as satisfying the prerequisite education for acceptance into the PMDip program and the CPA PEP. If your program does not cover all the required courses, you would need to take additional CPA preparatory courses. The Ted Rogers School and the Chang School of Continuing Education offer these courses to bridge any gaps.
Professional Master’s Diploma (PMDip) in Accounting: CPA Professional Education Program (CPA PEP) consists of core modules, elective modules and capstone modules, which prepare you for the final exam. Accredited by CPA Ontario, the TMU Professional Master’s Diploma (PMDip) in Accounting offers the necessary coursework to fulfill the CPA Core 1, Core 2 and Electives modules required in the CPA PEP. Using active learning and complex multi-stakeholder cases, the program provides you with skills to advance your professional career as you work towards the CPA designation. If you are not admitted to this competitive program, you still have a path through the CPA PEP.
Capstone modules: By completing the TMU’s PMDip program, you are deemed to have completed the two core modules and four elective modules (assurance, finance, taxation and performance management). You will be eligible for the CPA Capstone modules, which you will complete with the CPA Ontario.
Three-Day exam: This is an examination that evaluates students on the competencies defined by the CPA Canada Competency Map, which outlines the knowledge, skills and proficiency levels you must have as a Canadian CPA.
Success rate: Our students consistently achieve high pass rates on the CFE thanks to Ted Rogers School’s strong academic foundation and support.
Practical experience: This is an important component of the CPA certification program. It provides you the opportunity to apply and develop professional skills through hands-on work experience. Ted Rogers School’s’s co-op and internship opportunities can be a great way to start accumulating relevant experience.
Mentorship: You will need to find a CPA mentor to guide you through your practical experience journey. Ted Rogers School’s alumni network and faculty can help connect you with potential mentors.
