Law and Business
During your first year at the School of Business Management, you'll acquire the foundational business knowledge that prepares you to specialize in a major.
Major Overview
Critical thinking and the application of legal knowledge are at the heart of all courses offered in the Law and Business major, which provides you with the strongest integration of law and business among all Bachelor of Commerce programs in Canada. You and your fellow Law majors at the Ted Rogers School of Management at Toronto Metropolitan University are trained to identify and frame organizational problems from a legal perspective, but to develop business solutions. After finishing this program, you will be able to engage with and contribute to the growing needs of professionals who seek to ensure an organization’s regulatory and legal standards are met or exceeded.
Our faculty members are international experts in their fields but know more than just theory – they have extensive legal and business experience. As a result, students enjoy more absorbing in-class discussions and obtain a clearer picture of the many career and graduate opportunities available in the field. Your knowledge of the law will be valuable when dealing with many of the standard areas of business, such as contract negotiations, human resources, risk management, policy development and property transactions, as well as those of increasing importance to business operations, such as corporate social responsibility and corporate governance.
You will be well-positioned for work in both the private and public sectors, in specialties such as Compliance, Regulatory Affairs, Corporate Policy, Governmental Relations, Corporate Social Responsibility, Environment and Natural Resources. You will also have sufficient information to determine whether you want to pursue a professional career in law.
Business management students must complete a total of 40 credits which include Required, Required Group or Professional elective, Professionally-Related and Liberal Studies courses. The curriculum provides you with a general overview of business in society, introduces you to all of the basic business functions, and develops awareness of social, human and economic issues through the introduction of the liberal studies.
