Dr. Linying Dong
Dr. Linying Dong is a Full Professor at the Ted Rogers School of Information Technology Management. After her graduation from Richard Ivey School of Business in 2004, Dr. Dong has joined Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) and become a valuable member who has excelled at research, teaching, and services.
Dr. Dong is passionate about conducting significant research in the field of Management Information Systems (MIS) with the aim of producing actionable knowledge. Her research centers around IT leadership, IT governance, and IT-enabled business process improvement. Dr. Dong has established her reputation in IT leadership, particularly in IT adoption and implementation. Her research on the impact of project champions and supervisors on successful adoption and implementation of an enterprise system (e.g., SAP, Oracle) has been published in top tier IS journals including Information Technology (JIT), European Journal of Information Systems (EJIS), Information Systems Journal (ISJ), Communications of the AIS, and International Journal of Information Management ((IJIM).
In the area of IT governance, Dr. Dong focuses on information governance in the Canadian healthcare system and sustainable elderly care. She was instrumental in a research project collaborated with COACH, Canada’s Health Informatics Association (former Digital Health Canada) in the development of a shared health information governance framework and a maturity model assessing health information governance (external link) . Collaborating with experienced healthcare practitioners and researchers, she co-authored the article Why is information governance important for electronic healthcare systems? A Canadian experience (external link) (which has received over 3,500 reads on ResearchGate), and published the INTEGRATE model (external link) shedding light on IT and integrated care in the healthcare sector. To raise the awareness of IT governance in the Canadian healthcare sector, she wrote a commentary Good governance is the missing ingredient for effective digital health care (external link) , which was published at the Conversation, a well-known outlet promoting independent and high-quality publications.
Dr. Dong is keen on emerging technologies and their significant implications to practitioners. Collaborating with practitioners, she has co-authored cases encompassing cloud computing, mobile payment, health inventory management, and system integration for healthcare, which are published by the renowned Ivey Case Publishing and case-oriented outlets.
Dr. Dong is an innovative educator who is devoted to relevant, timely, and value-added teaching by introducing up-to-date knowledge from industries and equipping students with skills and experience of popular software applications. Dr. Dong has never stopped experimenting creative teaching methods to engage students, inspire learning, and mostly importantly, enhance their learning curiosity. During her tenure at TMU, Dr. Dong has taught eleven courses to undergraduate and masters students, developed five new courses including one elective, two core courses and two capstone courses, and coordinated six courses. She was awarded numerous teaching awards for her teaching excellence including the most prestigious life-time teaching achievement award at Ryerson --Ryerson Provost’s Award for Experiential Teaching (2018), the Dean’s Teaching Award (2020), the Best Poster Award by Ryerson LTO (2016), and the TRSM Innovation Teaching Fund three times (2017-2018). Because of her excellence in teaching, she was invited as an expert panelist sharing insights into quality teaching at the annual Ryerson Learning and Teaching conference.
As a valuable member of the TMU community, Dr. Dong has served on the different levels (university, faculty, and school) of committees covering various university functions including community building (i.e., faculty affairs, collegiality, tech support), hiring, promotion of excellence, teaching (i.e., curriculum, workload, CE program), and student engagement. Dr. Dong has transformed student case competitions, and her leadership and dedication contributed to the outstanding performance by TRSITM students at international and national case competitions: CaseIT (international, second place in 2016), the National Business & Technology Conference (national; second place in 2016 and first place in 2017 in the FinTech stream), and the National BTM student competition (national; first place in 2017 and 2018). Due to her valuable contributions to the Ryerson community, she was awarded Dean’s Services award twice (2016, 2018), the only faculty who has received the award consecutively at TRSM. She is also the second person in the Ryerson history who was awarded two Ryerson awards (Provost’s Award for Experiential Teaching and Dean’s Service Award) in a single academic year.
