Supporting Faculty to Understand and Reduce the Impacts of Ableism

Ableism; Disability awareness; Inclusive teaching; Attitudinal barriers; Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).

The AODA’s proposed postsecondary education standards identify eight barrier areas that impact students with disabilities, with "Attitudes, behaviours, perceptions, assumptions" ranked as the most significant. This workshop will explore the recommendations provided by the AODA and equip academic leaders  with tools to address and reduce ableism within their departments and faculties.

Key focus areas include:

• Increasing awareness of disability bias and ableism
• Elevating the student experience and voice
• Addressing attitudinal barriers as they arise
• Connecting ableism to the university’s EDI commitments
