Criminal Harassment and Stalking

No one deserves to be stalked or harassed

Criminal harassment, including stalking, is repeated and unwanted harassing behaviour, despite you having expressed that you want to be left alone. This behaviour is often intended to frighten and control the person being harassed or stalked, and can cause anxiety, fear, depression, isolation and the feeling that your work or learning environment isn’t safe. The harasser can be someone you are dating or used to date, a coworker, an acquaintance, a family member or someone you have no relationship with at all.

Examples of criminal harassment and stalking

Criminal harassment and stalking can include someone:

  • following you;
  • waiting for you at your home, school or work;
  • repeatedly contacting you via phone, email, social media, etc.;
  • sending you unwanted gifts;
  • contacting your family or friends to get information about you; and
  • threatening to harm you, the people you care about, or themselves.

Criminal harassment and stalking is a crime

Criminal harassment and stalking are crimes as outlined in the Criminal Code of Canada (external link) . This behaviour is against the law and absolutely unacceptable.

Harassment is also a violation of TMU policies such as the Student Code of Conduct, the Workplace Civility and Respect Policy, and the Discrimination and Harassment Prevention Policy. Harassment and stalking are community issues which TMU takes seriously.
