Internships

The School of Child and Youth Care provides you with valuable opportunities to put your classroom training into practice in actual employment environments.

As a student in the full-time, four-year Child and Youth Care degree program, you will participate in two internship experiences in the second and fourth year of your program.

These hands-on learning experiences will deepen your understanding of the field, enhance your knowledge and skills, promote your personal growth and prepare you for a meaningful career.

Your internship placement may occur in settings such as:

  • Mental health centres
  • Educational settings
  • Resource centres
  • Correctional centres
  • Rehabilitation centres
  • Recreational facilities
  • Community-based programs

**Not all placements are available during COVID-19, particularly in health care settings.

Your internships are pass/fail courses that will require you to to complete a portfolio documenting your achievement of competency goals. You can refer to the academic calendar for prerequisite course information.

Your internship will be facilitated by the following individuals:

  • The faculty advisor is the person at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) who meets with you during seminars, visits you at your site, monitors your learning and assigns your final grade.
  • Your field supervisor is the person who mentors you at your site, provides you with ongoing feedback and evaluates your performance.
  • The internship coordinator is the person at TMU who liaises between you, the field supervisor and the faculty advisor to ensure the overall success of your placement.

Your second year internship will include the following components:

  • 12 weeks at site placements in one term (fall or winter), 3 days per week on-site (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday), for a total of 288 hours
  • A weekly one-hour seminar to integrate classroom knowledge with your field experiences
  • Online forum to facilitate ongoing discussion between seminar sessions

Your fourth year internship will include the following components:

  • 12 weeks at internship in both fall and winter terms, 3 days per week (Wednesday to Friday) on-site in the fall and 2 days per week on-site (Thursday and Friday) in the winter, for a total of 480 hours
  • A weekly one-hour seminar to integrate classroom knowledge with your field
  • Online forum to facilitate ongoing discussion between seminar sessions

Note: The days and time of your internship are flexible and may include evenings and weekends.

If you’d like to explore child and youth employment practices and opportunities outside of Ontario, you can pursue an international internship.

You can complete your second internship in another province or country.

Your international placement will take place in the spring or summer semesters.

To learn more about this international learning opportunity, contact TMU Global or the CYC Internship co-ordinator.
