    Course DescriptionWicked problems are pervasive issues that resist traditional problem-solving approaches due to their interconnected nature, ambiguity, and evolving dynamics. In this course, students develop the skills/mindset necessary to address complex, multifaceted challenges that defy easy solutions, through an introduction to wicked problems, systems thinking, interdisciplinary and socially just approaches, design thinking, ethics and equity, adaptive leadership, creative interventions and prototyping.

  • CSE 101 - Design Theory
    Course DescriptionThis course will be offered in the blended format and will provide an introduction to the spatial design disciplines amongst other design principles. Students will gain an appreciation of the value and meaning of design within human culture and of the breadth of design fields in the contemporary world. Key theoretical concerns for design are discussed within the context of a “wicked problem” design assignment.

  • CSE 200 - Creative Strategic Foresight
    Course DescriptionBuilding on the problem solving skills and core knowledge areas developed in year one, students will learn the principles of strategic foresight methodologies including environmental scans, trend watching, and scenario design to identify, anticipate, and better prepare for future trajectories of their evolving creative disciplines and industries.

  • CSE 201 - Social Justice in Design
    Course DescriptionIn this course, students are asked to consider how design practices can contribute to the enhancement of social justice, equity, and environmental equality. Drawing from sources in post-colonial, race, gender, queer and disability studies, and using a multidisciplinary approach, the course will examine what it means to design and construct a just society.

  • CSE 300 - Creative Global Masterclass
    Course DescriptionIn this live masterclass, students will learn from leading international creatives about issues including co-creation, production, development, financing, distribution and audience development, all within a global context. Esteemed guest practitioners from around the world and beyond a Eurocentric lens will bring students virtually “inside” their cities, studios, offices and social media stages to share their experiences and expertise working internationally.

  • CSE 310 - International Context
    Course DescriptionThis course provides an academic and pragmatic framework to complement in-person international intensives and exchanges. Students will consider their travel locations' social, cultural, and political climates through research assignments and reflections. Classes will be asynchronous and consist of video, audio, and written content modules. Topics include cross-cultural communication, designing for global audiences, cultural sensitivity in design and creative industries, and intercultural collaboration.

  • CSE 410 - Creative Capstone Enrichment
    Course DescriptionModeled on a zone experience, this course amplifies the impact of students’ capstone or thesis projects, providing foundational learning and support in terms of market readiness and professional success, be it fundraising, audience development, distribution strategies, or otherwise, in order to amplify the impact of the capstone or thesis project, and/or establish the independent career of the creator within their chosen industry. Students have access to industry mentors who provide individualized direction and guidance in transitioning from academic to industry careers.
