Undeclared Arts (First Year Studies Only)

Program Format: First-year studies only.

O.S.S.D. with six Grade 12 U/M courses, including Grade 12 U English.

Notes: 

  1. ENG4U/EAE4U is the preferred English.
  2. A grade of 70 percent or higher will be required in Grade 12 U English.
  3. Students who are completing, or have already completed, post-secondary studies must apply to one of the ten program areas – Criminology, English, Environment and Urban Sustainability, Geographic Analysis, History, Language and Intercultural Relations, Philosophy, Politics and Governance, Psychology or Sociology. Transfer credit / advanced standing cannot be granted for the Undeclared Arts option.
  4. Subject to competition, candidates may be required to present averages/grades above the minimum.

 

Undeclared Arts is a first-year studies option that allows students time to explore program areas in the social sciences and humanities before choosing the program they wish to pursue as a major or double major over the next three years.

Program Transfer Options

Because the above programs share a common one-year foundation, all of the courses successfully completed in Undeclared Arts are credited to the student's program of choice.

Students who have already decided which of the above major programs they are interested in should apply to those programs directly, and should consult the relevant pages of this calendar for program details.

Students interested in one of the above double major programs must apply to one of the major programs or to Undeclared Arts, from which they can apply to transfer in their second semester of studies to one of the approved double major programs. Students are not admitted into a double major in first year. Double major programs other than those listed above have not been approved and thus may not be taken. Students who are completing, or have already completed post-secondary studies, must apply to one of the major programs. Transfer credit/Advanced Standing cannot be granted for the Undeclared Arts option.

Semesters One and Two: Undeclared Arts students learn more about the program areas by selecting foundation courses in the social sciences and humanities. Two required first-year courses in Academic Writing and Research and in Critical Thinking develop essential skills and competencies that will enhance students' success in university and career preparation. Students also choose additional electives from a wide range of areas, including business, the natural sciences, media, and fine arts, and any one of these can lead to a Minor. Transferability Guidelines

Students who have been admitted into the Bachelor of Arts – Undeclared must apply to transfer by second semester to one of the programs listed below. No student can remain Undeclared past second semester. Transfer applications are provided via Google Form and must be submitted by February 2nd. All program transfers will be considered on a competitive basis and are subject to program capacity.

Program Transfer Options Transferability Guidelines
Criminology Students must have successfully completed CRM 100 in order to transfer to Criminology for the Fall term of their second year of studies. It is strongly recommended that students complete both CRM 100 and CRM 102 in first year. Transfer applications are considered on a competitive basis subject to space availability. Students intending to transfer to Criminology for second year are normally expected to present a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 (B) in their first semester studies at Toronto Met to maximize their chances for consideration, subject to competition and available second-year spaces. Possession of the minimum cumulative grade point average does not guarantee program transfer.
Criminology and History Double Major Students must have successfully completed CRM 100 and HIS course numbered between HIS 100 and HIS 399 (or HIS 461, HIS 462 or HIS 490). It is strongly recommended that students complete, in first year, both CRM 100 and CRM 102 as well as two HIS courses numbered between HIS 100 and HIS 399 (or HIS 461, HIS 462 or HIS 490). HST courses may be substituted for HIS courses with departmental approval. Students are normally expected to present a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 (B) in their first semester studies at Toronto Met to maximize their chances for consideration, subject to competition and available second-year spaces. Possession of the minimum cumulative grade point average does not guarantee program transfer.
Criminology and Politics and Governance Double Major Students must have successfully completed CRM 100  and POG 100 or POG 110. It is strongly recommended that students complete, in first year, both CRM 100 and CRM 102 and POG 100 and POG 110. Students are normally expected to present a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 (B) in their first semester studies at Toronto Met to maximize their chances for consideration, subject to competition and available second-year spaces. Possession of the minimum cumulative grade point average does not guarantee program transfer.
Criminology and Sociology Double Major Students must have successfully completed CRM 100 and SOC 105. It is strongly recommended that students complete, in first year, both CRM 100 and CRM 102 and SOC 105 and SOC 107. Students are normally expected to present a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 (B) in their first semester studies at Toronto Met to maximize their chances for consideration, subject to competition and available second-year spaces. Possession of the minimum cumulative grade point average does not guarantee program transfer.
English Students must have successfully completed ENG 110 in order to transfer to English for the Fall term of their second year of studies. It is strongly recommended that students complete both ENG 110 and ENG 208 in first year.
English and History Double Major Students must have successfully completed ENG 110 and one HIS course numbered between HIS 100 and HIS 399 (or one of HIS 461, HIS 462 or HIS 490). It is strongly recommended that, in first year, students complete both ENG 110 and ENG 208 as well as two HIS courses numbered between HIS 100 and HIS 399 (or HIS 461, HIS 462 or HIS 490). (HST courses may be substituted for HIS courses with departmental approval.)
English and Philosophy Double Major Students must have successfully completed ENG 110 and PHL 102. It is strongly recommended that in first year, students also complete ENG 208 and one of PHL 101, PHL 110, PHL 187, PHL 201, PHL 212, PHL 306, PHL 333, PHL 365, PHL 366, and PHL 406.
Environment and Urban Sustainability Students must have successfully completed EUS 102 or EUS 202 in order to transfer to Environment and Urban Sustainability for the Fall term of their second year of studies. It is strongly recommended that students complete EUS 102 and EUS 202 in first year.
Geographic Analysis Students must have successfully completed GEO 131 or GEO 151 in order to transfer to Geographic Analysis for the Fall term of their second year of studies. It is strongly recommended that students complete both GEO 131 and GEO 151 in first year.
History Students must have successfully completed one HIS course from among the courses numbered between HIS 100 and HIS 399 (or HIS 461, HIS 462 or HIS 490). It is strongly recommended that students complete two HIS courses numbered between HIS 100 and HIS 399 (or HIS 461, HIS 462 or HIS 490). in first year. (HST courses may be substituted for HIS courses with department approval.)
History and Philosophy Double Major Students must have successfully completed one HIS course (completion of two is recommended) numbered between HIS 100 and HIS 399, or one of HIS 461, HIS 462, or HIS 490, as well as PHL 102. HST courses may be substituted for HIS courses with departmental approval. It is strongly recommended that in first year, students also complete one of PHL 101, PHL 110, PHL 187, PHL 201, PHL 212, PHL 306, PHL 333, PHL 365, PHL 366, or PHL 406.

Language and Intercultural Relations Students must have successfully completed LIR 100 in order to transfer to Language and Intercultural Relations for the Fall term of their second year of studies. It is strongly recommended that students complete both LIR 100 and a FRE or SPN course above the 101 level in first year.
Philosophy Students must have successfully completed PHL 102 and preferably one of PHL 101, PHL 110, PHL 187, PHL 201, PHL 212, PHL 306, PHL 333, PHL 365, PHL 366, and PHL 406.
Politics and Governance Students must have successfully completed POG 100 or POG 110 in order to transfer to Politics and Governance for the Fall term of their second year of studies. It is strongly recommended that students complete both POG 100 and POG 110 in first year.
Politics and Governance and Sociology Double Major Students must have successfully completed POG 100 or POG 110 as well as SOC 105. It is strongly recommended that students complete both POG 100 and POG 110 as well as SOC 105 and SOC 107 in first year.
Psychology Students must have successfully completed PSY 102 in order to transfer to Psychology for the Fall term of their second year of studies. It is strongly recommended that students complete both PSY 102 and PSY 202 in first year. Transfer applications are considered on a competitive basis subject to space availability. Students intending to transfer to Psychology for second year are normally expected to present a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 (B) in their first semester studies at Toronto Met to maximize their chances for consideration, subject to competition and available second-year spaces. Possession of the minimum cumulative grade point average does not guarantee program transfer.
Sociology Students must have successfully completed SOC 105 in order to transfer to Sociology for the Fall term of their second year of studies. It is strongly recommended that students complete both SOC 105 and SOC 107 in first year.

Minors

Students may pursue any Minor offered by Toronto Met (with some exceptions). Please refer to the Minors chapter of this calendar for further information on individual Minor requirements and exclusions.

Students are to follow this curriculum until they choose and are admitted to, one of the following specific programs of study: Criminology, Criminology and History Double Major, Criminology and Politics and Governance Double Major, Criminology and Sociology Double Major, English, English and History Double Major, English and Philosophy Double Major, Environment and Urban Sustainability, Geographic Analysis, History, History and Philosophy Double Major, History and Politics and Governance Double Major, History and Sociology Double Major, Language and Intercultural Relations, Philosophy, Politics and Governance, Politics and Governance and Sociology Double Major, Psychology or Sociology.

1st Semester
