Toronto Metropolitan University Student ID Number

The TMU Student ID Number is a nine digit number that uniquely identifies students to faculty and program administrators at Toronto Metropolitan University. (It can easily be found on your OneCard below your name.)

Identity Management — Policies and Procedures

To ensure the integrity of TMU student records, all students must be associated with one TMU Student ID Number. This TMU Student ID Number is linked to all of the students’ academic history, class enrolments and financial information at Toronto Metropolitan University.

To assist TMU in maintaining accurate records, students have the responsibility to ensure that TMU is informed of any changes or corrections to their personal information. This information may include, but is not limited to the following:

  • Student’s First and/or Last Name
  • Home address
  • Mailing address
  • Phone number(s)
  • Date of Birth


Name changes or corrections to Name or Date of Birth must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar using the Personal Data Change Form.

Note: Supporting Documentation is required for all Name Changes. (See Personal Information Change Requests).

TMU Online Identity

Students use their TMU online identity to access various online resources.

Students are eligible to activate their TMU online identity 24 hours after they have been admitted to a degree program, enrolled in a continuing education course, or hired by Toronto Met.

During the activation process students will be able to select their my.torontomu.ca user name, such as: johndoe, john.doe, etc.

TMU email addresses take the form: username@torontomu.ca, where username is the student's my.torontomu username, eg. john.doe@torontomu.ca.

For security reasons passwords should never be shared or written down.

A Student/Applicant ID or Employee Number is needed to activate a TMU online identity. (See information on how to activate your TMU online identity).

Two-Factor Authentication

All new students will be required to use two-factor authentication to access TMU services. This will require students to have either a mobile phone that can run Google Authenticator or a Universal 2nd Factor (U2F) key. U2F keys are available for purchase online or in some stores.

MyServiceHub is a one-stop shop for just about everything students need to do online, such as viewing their academic, financial and personal information and updating their records.

Students can:

  • Update their address and contact information
  • View the details of their scholarships, awards and bursaries
  • Add, drop and swap courses
  • Request and view an Advisement Report
  • Apply to graduate
  • View their grades, Academic Standings and Grade Point Averages
  • View and print their timetables
  • Verify course enrolment and class sections
  • Check for time, availability and location of courses
  • View Student Fees tables
  • Request and pay for official transcripts and track processing of request
  • Register in a Chang School certificate program or transfer from a certificate program to a different certificate
  • Request official, personalized letters confirming enrolment status, graduation details, etc. (Details available at your Student Centre link called "Request a Letter")

All students in degree programs and all continuing education students are required to activate and maintain their TMU online identity in order to access TMU's email. MyServiceHub portal and learning system, and other systems by which they will receive official University communications.

Students are required to monitor and retrieve messages and information issued to them by the University via TMU online systems on a frequent and consistent basis.

Students have the responsibility to recognize that certain communications may be time-critical.

Students may forward their TMU email account to another electronic mail service provider address but remain responsible for ensuring that all University electronic message communication sent to their official TMU email account is received and read.

Procedures for student activation and use, as well as TMU Student Computing Guidelines, will be available on the Toronto Metropolitan University Computing and Communications Services (CCS) website. Students may communicate with TMU faculty, instructors, teaching and graduate assistants and staff in a variety of ways: in-person, telephone, letters (either hand-delivered, by regular post, courier or registered mail) or electronically.

TMU requires that any electronic communications by students to TMU faculty or staff be sent from their official TMU e-mail account.

The OneCard is the official identification card for the Toronto Metropolitan University community. As well as being the single most important piece of ID students possess during their time here at TMU, it also serves as a convenience card for many of the services available on campus, including the library, printing and photocopying, food purchases, discounts, savings and more.

First Time TMU Students

The OneCard is issued free of charge by the OneCard Office at first admission/enrolment, and must be picked up within one academic year from term of approval.

Students must provide their TMU student number and two pieces of valid government issued identification; at least one piece of identification must feature a current photo. Cards are not mailed and must be picked up in person. The OneCard is designed to last throughout the duration of study at TMU. There is an "Early Online Application Process Program" for the OneCard. In addition to the "Early Online Application Process Program", the OneCard office sets up special facilities for students to get their OneCard during Fall Orientation so that the card can be set-up properly for use.

Returning Students

Based on a student's continued enrolment with Toronto Metropolitan University, the OneCard will remain active for accessing University services. This may include access to buildings or labs.

Specifics of the TMU OneCard

The OneCard is used for identification purposes within the University. The front of the card shows the student photo, name, student number and library barcode. The back of the card has the magnetic black stripe. Within the card is Smart Card technology.

The Library bar code is used by the Library to keep track of student accounts. For more information on this please contact the Library.

The magnetic black stripe is used to make purchases on campus. This is called the TMU OneCard's 'stored value' prepaid service which effectively allows students to carry money on their TMU OneCard. If students lose their card they do not lose money. Load money onto the OneCard account at 15 add cash machines on campus (three are in the Library) and at the OneCard office. The OneCard office is the only place that accepts debit and credit cards.

Use the 'stored value' funds for: all TMU Food Services for meals (for example - the Hub Market Servery, Tim Horton's and Starbucks kiosks, ILLC Mutual Street Eatery, Oakham House Cafe, Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC) and Ram in the Rye); Bookstore; student photocopiers; student laser printers; drink and snack vending machines (approximately 100 on campus), Image Arts, Interior Design, Architecture, Rogers Post Production and the TMU Image Centre. The OneCard Smart Card technology can also be used for door access if activation is granted. Activation of this security feature is controlled by the student's school/department.

Care of The TMU OneCard

The initial TMU OneCard is free; however, students will be required to pay $35 (subject to change) for replacement cards due to damage or loss. Students should carry their OneCard with them at all times when on campus. Failure to produce a OneCard upon request by Security Officers may lead to removal from TMU property.

DO NOT PUNCH a hole in the OneCard. The TMU OneCard should be treated with care. Holes, creases, and cuts will render the card inoperable. Please do not leave the card in direct sunlight, near heat sources or in contact with magnetic fields.

Lost or Stolen Cards

It is important that lost or stolen cards are reported immediately. Students are responsible for unauthorized transactions resulting from the theft or loss of their card until such time as they have notified the One Card Office of the theft or loss. Students must also notify the Library to ensure their card is not used to remove books.

Accounts can be immediately frozen to protect funds. Notification occurs once the student has reported the lost/stolen card to the OneCard Office by email or telephone:

Undergraduate and graduate day classes begin at 10 minutes past the hour, and end on the hour.

The 10-minute interval provides travel time for students and faculty coming from various locations across a large, downtown campus. It is important that instructors complete their class by the scheduled end time, to provide the next instructor time to set up and to ensure that students have time to make their next class.

Evening classes at The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education (opens in new window)  begin at the scheduled start time – 6:00 pm, 6:30 pm, etc.

Instructors are encouraged to provide a reasonable break during any class that is two hours or longer.

The Campus Store

We are a University owned and operated service. Our primary responsibility is to provide textbooks and general book services to the University community and facilitate our academic support function. We also offer a large selection of stationery products, arts and drafting supplies, computer software, TMU apparel, school rings, and gift items in store and online.

The TMU Campus Store website is constantly expanding and bringing new ways to access course materials. Students can purchase textbooks, course materials as well as clothing and gifts online. Textbooks

Textbooks are very expensive. Writing, publishing, editing, importing, and transporting are some of the reasons for escalating costs. In addition, textbooks are published for a limited time and for a specialized market with constant updates to meet current trends. The Campus Store works within the limits of a fair pricing policy. Course kits are shelved with required textbooks. We strongly recommend that students attend their first class before purchasing their books.

Used Books

Used books are shelved with the stock of new titles in each course. We offer used books at 75% of the current price whenever possible. We also offer a book buy-back service.

Rental Books

Need a book for one semester? Try renting instead. A limited amount of selected textbooks is available for rent through the Campus Store.

General Books

We carry a fine selection of general books, with an extensive range of reference and supplemental reading recommended for courses. We carry books that specialize in business, engineering, computers, architecture, interior design, communications, nursing, and fashion.

Gifts and Memorabilia

School rings, key chains, mugs, frames, TMU memorabilia, and other gift items for those special occasions are available in store and online.

Software and Accessories

The Campus Store stocks a good selection of software and accessories at reduced educational institution prices. To purchase software, you must be a current student, staff, or faculty member. Visit our website for more details.
