Critical Issues in Design
This course introduces students to the area of Visual Culture, focusing on key subjects in art and design and their relationship to social theory in the Modern period. Visual signifying systems such as symbolism, iconography and semiotics will be covered, with an emphasis on visual literacy and how commercial images are produced and consumed. Students will also question how art and design intersects with issues of representation in terms of class, race and gender.
