Why I Chose This University

Before I came to this school, I was at a different university. I knew that my previous situation was in my control so I decided to take charge of it.

My first semester here began in September of 2020 as a transfer student, and I couldn’t be happier. Here are some reasons as to why I believe this university was the best fit for me.

1. Location!

City of Toronto

I’ve always wanted to be in the city in one way or another. Everyone in Toronto is always on the go because there are so many institutions and businesses located here. This kind of upbeat atmosphere makes me want to participate and do something, and in this case, I would be referring to studying! The architecture is truly amazing, and walking surrounded by it everyday is definitely something to experience. The city transforms itself at night and has a different kind of ambience radiating from it. If you’re like me and lovecity life, this place is for you.

2. Clubs!

Something I felt like I was missing at my previous university was opportunities to get involved. Here, there are a variety of clubs for you to join no matter where your interests lie. Personally, I love helping others and giving back to the community, so I knew Stem Cell Club would be the best place for me. You even have the chance to start a new club (external link, opens in new window) , so the options are truly endless!

3. Opportunities!

If you ever wanted a taste of the workforce before graduating, our various programs offer different kinds of experiential learning such as co-op, internships, field placements, and hands-on learning. We also have another student employment program called Career Boost. There are different jobs available across the university such as research, marketing or even client service positions. Fun fact, my job as a student ambassador is a Career Boost position! Besides all the on-campus jobs, you can’t forget all the opportunities that surround us in the city. There are so many places you are able to find opportunities in Toronto, and to think I’ve only touched on a few.

4. Small class sizes!

After my first year at my previous university, I understood how important it is to value small class sizes. It comes in handy when you’re trying to build connections with your professors, and it's crucial you put in the effort to do so because they are the ones that can help you along your journey. In large classes, it can be difficult to do this. Here you are able to ask questions, build relationships and get the help you need to succeed. I tend to excel when provided guidance, and maybe this is the same for you.

5. Entertainment!

How could I forget about all the fun you can have here! First off, our university’s clubs and organizations set up events like dances and game nights all the time. We also have some self-care initiatives such as dog therapy and yoga. The sports (external link)  teams here are great, and we have the chance to sit in on their games for free. Now, Toronto itself has many more entertainment opportunities for you. You can go skating (external link, opens in new window)  at Nathan Phillips Square, catch the dinosaurs at the ROM (external link) , look at some fine art at the AGO (external link) , play some games at an arcade or even go on a world tour of all the cuisines we have here. Moral of the story is, you’ll never be bored.

I hope some of the aspects I considered in my university choosing process has helped you in one way or another. I know it is a stressful time, but always remember when one door closes, another one opens.

“See” you soon!
