Students in different time zones, limited internet access, and “Zoombombing” have many of us rethinking our use of the popular video conferencing tool for virtual course delivery. While live online sessions can be valuable, this Small Talk focuses on three other asynchronous approaches you can integrate into your teaching. Working with a diverse student body requires instructors to use innovative and creative teaching methods to ensure the inclusion and engagement of all students. This is especially true online, where students who face barriers to inclusion often struggle even more. In this Small Talk, we will explore best practices for creating an accessible and inclusive learning environment using flexible approaches that can be customized and adjusted for individual needs.

As we move toward teaching remotely, we need to start thinking about how to guide our students through the learning materials. In this session, we will provide tips on using D2L Brightspace to organize and contextualize content, and provide wayfinding through the course. This will include suggestions for outlining the order in which learning materials, activities and assessments should be accessed.

Join this webinar if you are interested in designing or redesigning a course for the online environment. We will share effective approaches to course design, including writing course learning outcomes, planning student assessments, and selecting activities that support student learning. The goal is to identify what you want students to take away from your course, determine how they will demonstrate their learning, and identify ways that you can engage students and facilitate their success. Participants will receive a set of questions, strategies, and tools that will aid in the course design process.

Peer evaluation can be an incredible learning tool for the class. In this session, we will discuss approaches for incorporating peer evaluation into your course activities, and demonstrate the features of an online peer evaluation tool that we have added to D2L Brightspace, peerScholar. peerScholar allows instructors to set up individual, group or case study assignment submissions for students to peer review.

In this workshop, we will look at common accommodations at Toronto Metropolitan University and discuss efficient and effective strategies to not only assist students with disabilities, but also create an accessible online experience for all students.

On June 03, 2020, the The Creative School and the Centre for Excellence in Learning & Teaching presented a panel discussion on studio teaching in a virtual environment. Faculty members from FCAD and the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science shared their experiences with studio teaching online. They were also joined by a workshop technologist and a current student who shared their valuable perspectives on the transition to remote teaching.

In this workshop, facilitators will share innovative strategies for designing assignments and rubrics that effectively scaffold course learning outcomes, and that serve to develop student learning skills as part of the delivery of course content. Participants will reflect on learning outcomes in their own course offerings, discuss examples of how to scaffold summative assessments, and consider how a scaffolded approach can increase student engagement and success in online environments.
