SEM 101
Sign, Sense and Meaning
All signs and symbols require interpretation. Semiotics is the key to discovering meaning and revealing messages. Using ads, logos, texts, film, and other media, this course presents ideas from a wide range of semioticians, focusing on structuralist and
pragmatist approaches. By surveying key theorists and their influences, students acquire a broad understanding of the frameworks that shape today’s semiotic field of inquiry and new tools for paying attention to multi-layered meanings all around them.
