19C Literature and Culture
From Romanticism to the emergence of modernism, nineteenth-century
British literature and culture are characterized by revolutionary new ways of understanding the individual and society. Students examine how diverse literary and visual texts shaped and responded to changing social conditions, ideologies, and media. Topics may include science and the supernatural; the neo-gothic; childhood; nature and ecology; gender, race, and class; consumer culture; decadence and aestheticism; emerging technology; and imperialism.
