Research and Innovation

Ryerson is Canada's comprehensive innovation university.  Research at Ryerson is growing rapidly. The university is ranked first in Ontario and fourth nationally for research growth.  Ryerson’s researchers are known for being able to solve practical problems, using collaborative research methods and partnering with industry, government, and not-for-profit organizations to develop new technologies and services, improved processes and create new companies and social enterprises. Innovations developed by Ryerson researchers improve Canadian businesses, create jobs and improve the quality of life for Canadians.

Ryerson has more than 125 innovative research centres, institutes, and labs across a wide range of disciplines, and we are home to 11 Canada Research Chairs. Our faculty pursues research and innovation across themes, which include biomedical engineering, digital media, health and well-being, energy, sustainability and the environment, aerospace engineering, design, creative expression and cultural industries and civil society.

Ryerson is quickly becoming world-renowned for its approach to advancing innovation. In particular, Ryerson is recognized for the creation of its innovation ‘zones’. These zones bring together faculty, students, and industry partners to solve research problems, providing opportunities for students to learn by working with industry clients or by creating their own companies. Currently Ryerson is home to the Digital Media Zone (DMZ) and the Innovation Centre for Urban Energy (i-CUE).
