The Student Campus Centre (SCC) may be new in name, and the building may look new thanks to recent construction, however Oakham House - the building which forms the core of the SCC - is a long serving institution within the Ryerson community and was around long before Ryerson even existed.
Originally constructed in 1848, Oakham House was designed by local significant architect William Thomas, and served as his personal residence. Additions were made to the original house in 1900, and later Oakham House served as a "working boy's home". The house was acquired by Ryerson in 1960, and after renovations, was reopened as the social and cultural centre of the Ryerson community.
Following the construction of a significant addition to the house, the SCC opened its doors in March of 2005. Located at 55 Gould Street, the SCC is home to the following community groups:
Lower Level: CopyRite, The Used Book Room, Travel Cuts, and numerous student groups affiliated with the Ryerson Students' Union.
2nd Floor: Oakham House Societies. CKLN 88.1 FM, The Eyeopener, Working Students' Centre, The Women's Centre, RyePRIDE, RyeACCESS, Community Food Room.
3rd Floor: Continuing Education Association at Ryerson (CESAR), Ryerson Students' Union (RSU), and the Ryerson Seniors Lounge.
The SCC also runs the following Services for the Ryerson Community.
Meeting Rooms
With 11 meeting rooms of various sizes, groups from two to 200 can be accommodated for conferences, workshops, meetings, seminars, and other events. The full service kitchen also provides full catering for events. Rooms are provided free of charge for RSU recognized student groups and organizations, and can also be booked by Ryerson departments, and external organizations. Revenue raised from external conferencing functions is entirely reinvested in the Student Campus Centre, allowing for improvements to be made, and helping to reduce the cost of other services for students.
Oakham Cafe
Located on the first floor of Oakham House, the Oakham Cafe offers a quiet and relaxed break from your hectic day with innovative, fresh cuisine at very reasonable prices. Student meal cards are accepted.
Ram in the Rye
The Ram in the Rye is Ryerson's community pub with seating for over 250, a wide variety of competitively priced food and beverage options, and programming and entertainment happening nearly every night of the week. An outdoor patio with seating for nearly 200 is the most popular spot in the neighbourhood to relax after class or after work, during the summer months.
