What does it mean to be a Black TMU grad?
To be a Black Toronto Metropolitan University grad means everything to me. I was going to spaces where I did not always see people that looked like me or had more privilege. I was often discouraged. However, my background and unique perspective made my learning experience more meaningful as I was able to contribute so much to academic discussions due to my identity and Afrocentric upbringing. To graduate from Toronto Met means I can prove everyone that doubted me wrong. I can help others and continue to embrace who I am. I'm so proud of myself. These four years were not easy, but I made it to this point. I want to take this experience with me wherever I go. I have met some outstanding professors and faculty here at this school and I would like to thank them. Being a Black graduate means that I can do anything I put my mind to.
What advice do you have for other Black Ryerson students?
Never give up or limit yourself to what society tells you is possible. You have exceptional gifts and are worthy of success. It will be challenging, you may fail, have hiccups and things will never be perfect, and that is okay. Often Black people are given the idea that they must be perfect for standing in spaces where, traditionally, we're denied. However, perfectionism is not necessary. Having passion, determination and character will get you where you need to be. You are breaking barriers to pursuing your education. Congratulate yourself when no one does it for you. Lastly, being different is a gift. Wear your identities with pride.
