About this Event

Ryerson University’s ‘Women in the House’ program presents “Women in Media: Telling Stories about Politics” featuring prominent women closely involved with telling stories about politics through journalism and media. Come and find out more about their journey into their roles in media covering federal politics, their life during the pandemic, the barriers they face and how they have overcome them.

About the speakers:

Marieke Walsh is a reporter in The Globe and Mail’s Ottawa bureau. Before joining The Globe, she covered the Ontario legislature for iPolitics and the Nova Scotia legislature for Global News. She started her journalism career on Parliament Hill producing political TV shows for CBC and Global News.

Charelle Evelyn began her professional journalism career in Ottawa after graduating from Carleton University in 2008 before heading back to her home province of British Columbia to work for the Prince George Citizen. She returned to the National Capital Region in 2016 to join Hill Times Publishing, where previous roles have included reporter and associate editor of The Wire Report, and deputy editor of The Hill Times. Charelle also worked as a field reporter for CPAC’s Ridings to Watch series during the 2019 election.

Salimah Shivji is a senior reporter for CBC National News with the public broadcaster's Parliamentary Bureau, who has covered politics for the past decade, in Ottawa and in three different provinces.

Kathleen Monk is a senior communications and campaign strategist with 20 years of experience in media, politics, and the not-for-profit sector. Kathleen works as a Principal at Earnscliffe Strategy Group, dedicating her energies to advocacy campaigns, issues management, and guiding public affairs strategy. She appears regularly on CBC News Network where she provides political analysis for Power and Politics.

Jennifer Ditchburn (moderator) is the editor-in-chief of Policy Options, the award-winning online magazine of the Institute for Research on Public Policy (IRPP). A longtime journalist, she spent more than two decades covering national and parliamentary affairs for The Canadian Press and for CBC Television. She is a three-time winner of a National Newspaper Award, the recipient of the prestigious Charles Lynch Award for outstanding coverage of national issues, and most recently three Canadian Online Publishing silver awards for her columns. In 2015, she was named one of the ten most influential Hispanic-Canadians.
