True or False? My TMU Student Experiences
If you’ve been reading my blogs for a while, then you might know that I’m currently in the process of wrapping up my final semester of the Creative Industries program here at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). If you’re new here, then hi! I’m Jenna, a current TMU student and your student ambassador. During my years here, I’ve had some pretty great experiences. Some were SO great, that they might even sound too good to be true! Whether you’re familiar with me or this is the first time we’re meeting, let’s play a game of True or False to see if you can figure out what’s true and what’s false about my TMU experience!
I’m taking a class all about Taylor Swift
True! This semester I’m taking the class CRI 450: Appreciating Creativity in Practice, and the section I’m enrolled in is all about Taylor Swift and the franchise she has created for herself throughout her career. I am a bit of a Swiftie, so I just knew I had to take this course. I truly knew it was meant to be when during the first class we analyzed the music video for “Look What You Made Me Do.” The topics of this course change every year, so it’s not guaranteed that this particular subject will be offered again, but you never know! In the meantime, you can read my “If Taylor Swift Eras Were TMU Students” blog to get your Taylor Swift x TMU fix.
I was mentored by an upper-year student

False! As part of TMU’s Tri-Mentoring Program, first-year students are paired with upper-year students in the same program to form a mentee-mentor relationship. It’s a great way for new students to learn more about campus, their classes and what else they may encounter throughout their degree. I unfortunately wasn’t a mentee in my first year, but I was a mentor to a first-year student when I was in my second year at TMU!
I got paid to take notes in class

True! Through the TMU Peer Note-Taking program, I was able to make some extra cash for something I was already doing — taking notes during lectures! You can sign up to be a peer note-taker for any of your courses. If chosen, you’ll get an email and instructions on how to upload your notes to a portal after each class. It’s a great way to help a fellow student who needs support and motivate yourself to take good notes.
I’m working towards a minor

True! When I first started at TMU, I was overwhelmed by all the opportunities available to me, including the chance to add a minor to my degree. It wasn’t something I actively thought about until the beginning of third year when I realized that I had already taken some classes that qualified me for an English minor! I decided to buckle down and use my remaining electives towards my minor, which I’ll declare when I apply to graduate this year.
I lived in the International Living/Learning Centre (ILC) in my first year

False! I did live in residence during my first year at TMU, but I lived in Pitman Hall, not ILC. Although most of my friends lived in ILC and I visited often, so I basically lived there too! Residence is a great way to get familiar with campus and make friends, especially if you’re not from Toronto. Each residence building has its own charms, so research which one might be best for you! You can also explore residence by checking out the Housing & Residence Life virtual tour stop.
I had a class in the Eaton Centre

False! The CF Toronto Eaton Centre (external link, opens in new window) is a huge shopping mall located next to campus, and although I didn’t have classes in the Eaton Centre, the Ted Rogers School of Management building is connected to the mall. This has resulted in many shopping trips after classes, some of which were not totally necessary. Okay, most of which were not totally necessary. It’s a good thing I don’t actually have classes in the Eaton Centre, because I may or may not spend enough time there anyways.
I had a class in a movie theatre

True! When I was in my first year, I had a class in a movie theatre located in the Cineplex at Yonge-Dundas Square, right near campus. It was actually really nice to be able to sit in the comfy movie theatre seats and have the professor’s lecture slides on the big screen. You now have a greater chance of experiencing this enhanced classroom experience, as TMU recently partnered with Carlton Cinemas; another movie theatre near campus that will house lectures! Thanks for playing True or False with me! I hope you had fun and discovered some new things you can look forward to as a future TMU student.
Until next time,
Jenna
