National Farm Animals Day - Genuine Taste’s Sustainable and Ethical Practices

National Farm Animals Day, April 10th, 2024, advocates for the humane, fair, and safe treatment of all farm animals. Animals are an important part of our ecosystem, thus the fair and sustainable treatment of animals is crucial. The Humane League (external link)  (2021), discusses the horrifying cruelty that occurs within factory farms surrounding confinement, genetic manipulation, and inhumane practices in the process of food and dairy production.

In 2023, BVZ introduced food sustainability as a new sector of focus and we welcomed startups addressing challenges in the food industry. One such startup that graduated from our Launch 2023 program is Genuine Taste (external link) , a BVZ alumni startup, who produces cultivated fat to provide consumers and companies with alternative protein products to aid in the transition towards ethical and sustainable alternatives.

Genuine Taste recognizes the cruelty that occurs within factory farms and the inhumane conditions that animals are subjected to, which has fueled their sustainable and humane agricultural practices.

Genuine Taste produces cultivated fat for alternative meat companies to provide consumers with a more sustainable and ethical food alternative. Their cultivated fat is produced ethically and safely through the extraction of stem cells from an animal with a small needle under anesthesia, ensuring that the animal does not feel any pain during this process. The stem cells are then further utilized in the process to create cultivated fat at scale. 

The startup emphasizes sustainability and animal welfare in their mission to create ethical meat alternatives. Sustainability and animal welfare are embedded within each of their activities, from producing cultivated meat at scale to lessen harm to the environment to ensuring stem cells are extracted without harm and pain to the animal.
