On February 27th the Urban Water Student Leadership Committee hosted part 2 of their Faculty Seminar Series! Drs. Chris Wellen and Stephanie Melles presented their work at the event which was well attended by a mixture of undergrad and graduate students! The in-person guests were also able to enjoy some food and snacks as the committee now has funding courtesy of TMSU!
Dr. Chris Wellen is an environmental scientist whose work focuses on the intersection of hydrology and biogeochemistry to understand and improve water quality in human dominated environments. His research approach consists of integrating mathematical modeling and big data/machine learning approaches, and supplementing with traditional catchment science fieldwork. He spoke about his work and how it is trying to inform better management practices of nonpoint source pollution in agricultural and urban areas.
Dr. Stephanie Melles is an Associate Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University in the Department of Chemistry and Biology with research interests in spatial analyses of ecological data, particularly in freshwater (urban) systems. Recent work focuses on impacts of freshwater salinization on lake zooplankton diversity and abundance; impacts of forest harvesting operations on soil mercury, or drivers of fish mercury concentrations; and global change drivers of extinction, diversity, and species range.
