The UW Student Leadership Committee celebrated World Water Day 2023 by organizing two initiatives that shed light on the importance of water and the challenges it faces in today's world. The initiatives, a compilation of water stories from UW researchers which were collected throughout March and a groundwater documentary film screening, held on March 24, 2023, encouraged interactive dialogue between UW researchers and interested TMU students.

The water stories submission was an invitation to all the UW students to share their personal experiences related to water in the form of a short story. You can read their submissions here: Water is Fun! Student Stories for World Water Day 2023. The second initiative was a documentary film screening on groundwater,  Pumped Dry: The Global Crisis of Vanishing Groundwater (external link) , which was followed by a tour of the Urban Water labs, the Analytical Lab in CUI104 and the Experimental Lab in CUI007. The documentary explored the challenges faced by communities around the world in accessing clean and sustainable sources of groundwater. The film highlighted the devastating impact of pollution and over-extraction on groundwater reserves and the need for greater awareness and action to protect this vital resource.

The tour that followed the documentary film screening provided an opportunity for the students to engage in a dialogue with UW researchers about their current and past research. Thank you to Wyatt, Corbin, and Brieanna for presenting on their work. The events were a reminder of the need for greater awareness and action to address the challenges faced by water resources around the world. The Student Leadership Committee has set an exemplary example for others to follow by organizing innovative and engaging initiatives to commemorate World Water Day 2023. These initiatives have not only inspired the students to think more deeply about the role of water in their lives but also provided a platform for dialogue and action on the pressing issues related to water resources around the world.
