Welcome to the Faculty of Arts, where student passion meets real-world practicality. Toronto Metropolitan University’s 75-year history of hands-on learning, and the commitment of our 200+ faculty members to conducting ground-breaking research and forward-looking approaches to teaching means that our 13 undergraduate programs encourage students to pursue their creative and intellectual interests while providing them with experiential opportunities that ground their studies in real-life applications.
In our rich learning and research environment, students can participate in co-op programs, community engaged learning and teaching, career integrated learning through job-shadowing, and internships and placements. Our students can choose to pursue studies in double major programs and engage in international exchanges and collaboration. We are also home to eight research centres that offer a wide variety of research and learning opportunities for students. Outside of the classroom, students have many opportunities to engage in extracurricular learning, such as the programming offered by the Democratic Engagement Exchange (external link) , the Institute for Future Legislators program, or the Youth Workers Rights Hub, and to participate in a variety of co-curricular and social activities delivered by our student society, the Society of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (external link) .
We are home to a diverse campus community of students, faculty, and staff; and we value equity, diversity and inclusion in our teaching, research, and community interactions. We offer interdisciplinary minors in Black Studies, LGBTQ2S+ Studies, and Middle East and North Africa Studies and support the work of the Yellowhead Institute (external link) . We are also committed to supporting our students throughout their academic journeys through the expertise and programming delivered by the professionals who make up our Student Experience Team.
The Undeclared Arts program provides an exciting opportunity for students in first-year who would like to explore options in the Social Sciences and the Humanities before deciding which major best suits their goals and ambitions. This transitional first year allows students to take core competency courses such as SSH 105 Critical Thinking I and SSH 205 Academic Reading and Writing while considering majors in History, English, Languages and Intercultural Relations, Philosophy, Sociology, Criminology, Psychology, Geographic Analysis, Environment and Urban Sustainability, Politics and Governance and Politics and Public Administration. Undeclared Arts students transition smoothly from a rich variety of courses in first year to the available program of their choice in second year. Undeclared Arts brings together a diverse group of students with diverse interests who go on to pursue Liberal Arts majors and double majors while often taking one or more minors. From the very beginning, Undeclared Arts students benefit from the option of curating their academic choices to create their own trajectory.
