Working with the media was challenging, earlier in my career. But I’m used to it now, and I’m no longer intimidated. I actually enjoy it. I find that working with the media has multiple benefits. First, it helps get the word out about my scholarly work. Second, the questions journalists ask me often help me to understand better the real-life concerns of the informed public beyond my own academic circles. Finally, it helps me boil my thinking down to a very concentrated few words. We all complain about 10-second sound bites, but making the occasional attempt to think in those terms can help you focus on what’s really important.
