Dan Martin, a second-year student in the Film and Photography Preservation and Collections Management (FPPCM) Master’s program, made an extraordinary discovery during his internship at Historic Films Archive in New York. While sorting through decades-old film cans, Martin came across a 16-millimeter reel of The Heart of Lincoln (1922), a film long thought to be lost to history.

Directed by Francis Ford, the film tells the story of President Lincoln during the American Civil War and had been listed by the Library of Congress as one of 7,000 silent films believed to be lost. Martin’s find not only uncovered a rare piece of cinematic history but also highlighted the importance of archival preservation. Currently interning at the Library of Congress in Virginia, Martin is working to restore the film to ensure its legacy is preserved for future generations.
