The Creative School displays Creative Technology at CF Toronto Eaton Centre
The Creative School has partnered once again with Cadillac Fairview (CF) to showcase faculty and student work at a retail space within CF Toronto Eaton Centre.
As part of Design TO, Creative Technology Showcase: Disrupting Technology in the Creative Fields can be seen at CF Toronto Eaton Centre from January 10 to January 29, 2023. The exhibition features projects that push the boundaries of creative technology and have been developed in The Creative School’s Design + Technology LAB. The featured projects include student, staff, and faculty work from across The Creative School and range from digital knitting, robotic performances, CNC milled furniture, UV printed images, wearable technology and more.
Members of the community across Toronto are encouraged to attend the exhibit to engage with and reflect on current social issues and creative explorations put forward by students and faculty from The Creative School.
Exploring new innovations in technology
The Creative Schools Design + Technology LAB is a creative tech-based workshop that supports research, scholarship, curriculum, and entrepreneurship activities across the faculty. Students and faculty are given the unique opportunity to disrupt and revolutionize the use of technology within the creative fields by leveraging digital fabrication tools such as CNC milling, 3D printing, textile computing, and robotics. The LAB is more than a fabrication facility and facilitates projects in the creative technology space including AR/VR, projection mapping, motion tracking, drones, 3D scanning, and more.
“The Creative Technology Showcase at CF Toronto Eaton Centre is a unique opportunity for the public to see how challenging conventional norms of fabrication, automation, and emerging technology are expanding how we rethink creative production and activities,” says Jonathon Anderson, Director of the Design + Technology LAB and Associate Professor in the School of Interior Design. “The exhibition is a small sampling of the innovative work being produced in the Design + Technology LAB and throughout The Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University.”
Collaborating with Cadillac Fairview
The partnership between The Creative School and Cadillac Fairview began in June 2022 with A Measure of Being, an exhibition that featured the work of 2SLGBTQIA-identifying students in honour of Pride Month. Curated by Caeden Wigston (external link) and Anne-Marie Cloutier, the duo approached the exhibition to ensure that the art represented a variety of Queer individuals’ experiences, from vulnerable to provoking.
The exhibitions at CF Toronto Eaton Centre are part of The Creative School’s commitment to providing opportunities to highlight student work, coursework, and research, in an exhibition environment.
“Partnerships with organizations like Cadillac Fairview and DesignTO are a great way to showcase the work of the talented faculty, staff, and students at The Creative School,” says Charles Falzon, Dean of The Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University. “Thanks to these important partnerships, the opportunity for public-facing exhibition space allows for ideas, projects and explorations to come to life.”
The Creative Technology Showcase is the first of three exhibits that will be presented at CF Toronto Eaton Centre in 2023 with the remaining exhibits taking place in June and November.
“Cadillac Fairview is committed to partnering with local artists to create vibrant and engaging spaces that reflect the communities that we are proud to be a part of,” said Sheila Jennings, General Manager, CF Toronto Eaton Centre. “Our centre is located in the heart of the city and following the success of our summer exhibit, through our ongoing partnership, we’re hopeful to continue to provide widespread awareness and community access to these talented individuals and their inspiring creations.”
