The Creative School partners with Humber College to launch two-year graduate studies program pathway

Graduate certificate to Master of Digital Media degree pathway will prepare the next generation of digital media innovators

The Creative School and Humber College have partnered to create a graduate studies program pathway for students interested in achieving two post-graduate credentials in two years. Students who enroll in select Humber College’s certificate programs can now transition into the Master of Digital Media (MDM) university degree program offered by The Creative School.

For international students, this creates a particularly beneficial opportunity as the certificate and degree programs can both be completed within two years as part of a two-year study permit. Both institutions are also located in Toronto, making it an easy transition for students looking to continue their studies in the creative industries and media arts.

The pathway program also provides students to create a customizable education plan where they are able to take one of over a dozen college graduate certificate programs from the entrepreneurship, business, IT and design streams at Humber College, and then transition to the MDM program at The Creative School.

The student perspective

Katelyn O’Brien, a recent MDM alumni, started her educational journey at the University of Guelph-Humber, where she acquired a BA in media studies and a diploma in media communications. After graduating and working for a year, she applied and was offered admission into the MDM program. She now works as a graduate assistant within the program as well.

“I went into the program at the University of Guelph - Humber because I wanted the opportunity to not only learn the theoretical foundation of media studies, but be able to apply this knowledge in the hands-on aspect of the program” she said. “Media representation is my favourite area of media studies, and I wanted a chance to document and analyze representation on screen, which is what I did in the Masters of Digital Media program at TMU (Toronto Metropolitan University).”

O’Brien further explained that bridging the theoretical foundations of media representation with the understanding of production allowed for a wider level of interpretation and understanding for her research project, which explored queer representation in children's animated television on streaming platforms in Canada.

A transdisciplinary experience

The MDM program is a one-year intensive professional program that prepares students for leadership roles in the digital media world by developing proficiencies in App creation, digital media strategy, gamification, augmented and virtual reality, physical computing, robotics, machine learning and more. Students in the program take courses and study business, art, design, technology, publishing, among others, to become disruptive innovators in the media industry.

“Humber’s graduate certificate to Master of Digital Media pathway will allow students to take advantage of an executive program that is transdisciplinary and uniquely designed to equip graduates with the skills and industry experience that they will need to be thought leaders in the digital media world,” says Charles Falzon, Dean of The Creative School. “This partnership represents a commitment to preparing the next generation of cultural industries change makers and innovators.”

Applications for the MDM winter 2023 cohort open on June 1, 2022 and close in November, aligning with the start of Humber’s graduate certificate enrollment in winter 2023. Learn more about The Creative School’s MDM program (opens in new window)  and Humber College’s graduate certificate programs.
